Ranked 1 on google...good search volume...rarely get traffic from them

Hey guys. I went through some of my old keyword articles to see where they are ranking right now and I noticed a problem. I have a handful of articles that are ranking number 1 for their keyword on google but I have seen very little (like 1 hit a week) to no traffic from them since I posted them. I double checked the search volume with googles free keyword tool and it claims they are all getting above at least 5k searches a month.

Now I've heard that the google tool may not be the best to use since it may also count amazon searchs or any other site that uses a google search toolbar. And I've been doing a lot of research on Market Samurai. Should I switch to the paid tool? It seems like its worth it with the product search function and all the other cool stuff it has, but I'm low on funds right now and try and keep it as free as possible.

Anyone else having trouble with googles tool?

Ya, If you're using googles ad words tool for your keyword search volume, it is isn't correct. Also make sure you're not logged into google when you're looking at your positions, that also will give you different results then when you're logged out.
I also need a good traffic estimator. SEOdigger used to be the killer free tool, but no more. Thinking of paying for SEOrush.

Thanks for the info, I've just posted a forum about this and it appears when I'm logged in I'm 1st and when I'm logged out I'm 8th - what's all that about?!?!

Without knowing the search term it is hard to say. For me, I had originally targeted a wine related term of "wine of month club" which, according to G, has 22k monthly searches. When I was #4 I got like 3 visitors a month....so either my conversion was awful(possible, not likely on that scale) or their free search sometimes gives inaccurate results for long tail. I think there are some other threads about this in the forum.

Thinking of upgrading to a paid tool myself.

Yeh, we have a thread about this that kind of explains the data.

It's not that it is "wrong", but it is misleading.

The info in GAKT is pulling query volume from EVERY Google property and not just queries done on Google's main search page.

What we are looking for is the main page search data, but they do not offer that currently from my understanding.

Is wordtracker any good? I come to the end of the free trial tomorrow and need to know if it's the best to use.

Yeah, I normally take 90% off the volume they say to get a more realistic figure. Oh well, niche marketing doesn't seem to shine as bright once you know this

Yeesh, talk about getting the wind knocked out of your sails.

I have about 10 adsense sites up that I have spent the last month working on, as I want to ensure they actually deliver useful content.
I followed various guidelines to find decent keywords ranging from 1500-4000 local exact matches per month.

I fired up 3 of them earlier this week and had them all index within the top 10. So far ive made about $8.00, but I am willing to bet it is mainly from the article traffic redirects...

At any rate, since there have been people who have been successful in taking this approach, I will continue to go till I hit around 20 sites or so, if I am not seeing any sort of scaling or improvements in earnings, then I will put the brakes on and try to find some other way to do my keyword research I guess..

Man, I swear, every time I feel like I finally have a grasp and long term business plan, I get smacked around and knocked off my high horse
That's the nature of the game I guess, and why the people who really stick through it and learn the ropes become so successful....

Slade, I know exactly how you feel buddy, just keep getting back on the horse, that's what I do and one of these days something I'm trying will work, but not yet.

Have you tried Market Samurai's keyword research tool?

I hear that's accurate, I just started using it and even on page 2 of my keyword I get some hits.

    And hey, it's free!

Well I just downloaded the free 14 day trial version. Going to give it a shot, looks good so far.
In fact, all 10 keywords I have 10 sites up for right now are showing pretty close to what google showed me, so I guess I lucked out. Either that or I am not using the MS keyword tool correctly

I would recommend comparing adwords with estibot as well, this can give you some more valuable information in your research!
