Fresh content non-sense?

OK so we were all told that having fresh content is the best and fastest way to rank well on any search engine. I don't necessarily believe this to be true for a bunch of reasons. I'm running around 6 websites at the moment and none of them have had any recent or new updates in months yet continue to increase in the SERP's. The reason is due to my light back linking over the months. That's right I said light meaning only adding roughly 100-200 back links per month. I can usually do all of them in one day and most of my sites have jumped significantly.

So to recap, no changes to the website, not going crazy building links and ranking really jumping in the SERP's. Crazy stuff and all the keywords are against super tough competition. A lot of the keywords have roughly 1-600 million site results competition.

So this all leads me to believe that constant back linking is the way to go and to forget about adding fresh content all the time. Your thoughts?

You don't need new content to get or keep high rankings. BUT, if you add fresh content then you'll get ranked high for more and more keywords and your traffic will grow.

How would fresh content get you to rank for more and more keywords exactly?

Often times without even knowing it, you're sprinkling your content with long tailed keywords. Most of them have very low search volumes but all together they do add up.

So in essence, what we need is BACKLINKS, not fresh content, to rank for our chosen keywords. Fresh content probably doesn't do squat here.

BUT, fresh content will add TRAFFIC as we get long tail keyword searchers to come to our site.

In the end is worth it do both - backlinks and content - unless you only want to build minisites for specific keywords, then simply concentrate on backlinks.

I have a money making site that was ranked top 10 for a few keywords I never even thought about.

Fresh content can help your site in SERP but backlinks is what really makes the difference.Loads of backlinks will get you ranked high.

Search engine loves fresh content. If you keep the content fresh, you will rank high for a long period.

young-money, I'm not buying that really. Fresh content doesn't not keep your ranked "for a long period of time" and any blogger knows this is a fact. It's all about back links the keeps your site up "for a long period of time".

A lot of my sites haven't been updated in years. They earn me steady money month after month. Perhaps they would earn more if I updated them?

I know that when you add a new page or post you do get a bit of a "freshness boost" for that page but it doesn't last very long.

To me it would seem like having fresh content would just be one of the many things the search engines look at when they try to determine where to rank your page. It's certainly not required for good rankings but like Lisa said, the more content you have the more search phrases you have a chance at being found for.

I think mostly you hear about having fresh content a lot because this is one of the things that people like to regurgitate without really knowing why they are regurgitating it.

There is a temporary boost for new content that can be helpful in more competitive niches or when kicking off a new site. However, I agree that over the long term that you don't have to have new content based on what I've seen on a number of sites I've had active for several years.

Fresh, unique content is not all. It must be, first and foremost,
desirable! Google prides itself on giving the sites it feels (or
algorithmed, to coin a phrase) are most appropriate for a
search at a given point in time. It may feel that a site that
has not been updated in years is still the best thing out there.
But, google is not perfect. Too many people think if they do
A,B, then C, they will get traffic from google. If it were that easy,
well, it wouldn't be google with good search results, that's for
      sure.

You can only think in the long run. If I do a,b, then c, and keep
going, someday I may get to numero uno with google.

Your fresh, unique content will never beat someone else who
has done what it takes to make a premiere site, updating
rarely, but doing things that needed to be done.

I agree, I have a cliebnt site that is like 7 years old which is mostly images (fashion) with lottle or no content but still remains in the top 3 for every major keyword in its niche. I did very little backlinking after the first year and the traffic is constant. Its great to be an authority site...lol
