Just wondering what the warriors think - do profile links play a big role in your backlink building? If not, what methods do you find the most successful and reliable?

I'm not a fan of profile linking. Unless you go to places that haven't been given out in a packet, then it won't get you anywhere.

I find the best places to get backlinks are dofollow social bookmarking sites, blog comments, and dofollow forum signatures.

Profile links just provide backlinks, which are firstly irrelevant, secondly they don't usually target any keywords as those profile pages place the direct URL to the website rather than linking any keywords.

If anyone is trying to get a rise in the count of backlinks then profile links can help, but the actual aim in SEO i.e. the keyword targeting and SERP ranking improvement is usually not possible with this.

      Ugh, here we go again.

      (1) yes, profile links "just provide backlinks". Isn't that the point?

      (2) who cares if they are relevant, and "relevant" according to whom? The vast majority of all of my links are irrelevant. In fact, I never seek out relevancy, as I really have no idea what that even means. This has *never* stopped my sites from ranking well in Google, and ranking very fast.

      (3) 99% of all of the sites that I post "profile" backlinks allow anchor text, so I have no idea what the hell you are talking about in terms of just allowing the URL. The only sites that I waste my time with that don't allow anchor text are .edu/gov sites or PR8 or 9.

      (4) Most of my sites that rank on the 1st page of google have at least 80% of their backlinks from "profile" backlinks.

      (5) In terms of time management and efficiency (i.e., the time it takes to put them up for their effective SERP rank), profile backlinks rank #1 in my book.

Yep, profile backlinks are awesome. I'm currently doing a case study on 6 different sites and I'm only using profile backlinks. I should be finished by the end of the year and I'll then post the results on here.

If all turns out as I suspect, hopefully people will stop doubting the ability of these links.

Relevancy is not an issue. If you take the time to create some "relevant" (whatever that may actually mean) text to auto post into the bio/about me fields etc, then yes I suppose it is a relevant content page, if you go for the whole relevant links are better ideology I suppose.

Profile links add to the mix of links that you should build.

Almost always by someone who joined in the last 30 days or has less than 20 posts. Funny how that works.

This is the equivalent of the duplicate content threads that start up every single day in the main forum. Some people will never learn.

100% of my sites have profile backlinks pointing to them. After I do a few social bookmarks (digg, clipmarks, jumptags) for quick indexing purposes and maybe a few RSS feeds, setting up profile backlinks is always the first thing I do.

They have always worked well for me with SERP rankings.

I do not feel that profile links should be discounted. But I do however feel that they should not be at the top of your SEO plan.
