Just put up my first website a few days ago and was going about adding content and getting ranked for my niche. Everything was going well, I was on page 4 and climbing and that was even BEFORE I added meta tags to my blog. I have gone about an gotten some great backlinks from dofollow sites. Then all of a sudden (seemed after I added meta tags) my site dropped form page 4 position 2 to page 11 position 3 . Now this is my first site so maybe its normal, just not sure how I could lose that much ranking just by adding Meta tags, which were supposed to help... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes! You can over do SEO.

Build things up slowly.. too much too soon and Google will punish you.

Add backlinks over time, not too many all at once.. add original content that's of real value to readers.

If Google thinks you're trying to SEO your site it may let you slip down the index.

Another explanation could be something called QDF, a Google algorithm that puts fresh/relevant content at the top of its index, but lets it slide back down over time.

Doing too much too early is a common mistake, and Google can penalize you quite severely for that - and for a long time even. Google likes to see stuff that looks natural, ie stuff that grows over time the way small legit sites would. I take it pretty easy with the link building the first few months because of that, and when I didn't I had the same thing happening to me that happened to you.

Thanks guys, I'll take it easy on the site for now. I really didn't think I was doing to much but it would make sense. How long would it take to recover my rank if I just left it alone for a while or is it permanent?

I think it's just a matter of time before you get back to the top, just keep adding backlinks to your site and you will be fine.

I like to think of it like the turtle and the hair.

Slow and steady wins the race. Don't try to do too much at once, aim for slow and steady for long term stability.

If it is a new site I find it normal for their ranking to be all over the place at first.

Like others have said just focus on development

What you are seeing is Google's "Query Deserves Freshness" algorithm in play. New content is often given a boost, how much of one is keyword dependent. After the initial boost, which can last a few days or even a few weeks, ranking goes back to whatever level the page should be ranked at based primarily on the number and authority or incoming links.

Changing the meta-tags on a site, other than the title tag, is unlikely to have a significant effect on your search engine placement. Changing the title tag could have an impact depending on what you did.

Lastly, don't worry about getting links "too fast". You can't physically do it with manual link building techniques. You can do it and subject your domain to temporary filtering algorithms by overusing and improperly using automated tools though.

        I absolutely agree....
Every day businesses start huge advertisement campaigns that naturally increase backlinks many times over in a single day.

Also, Anything viral may do this such as a video, a game, or some sort of contest.

You might slip back a couple of pages for a day or two but much of the time you at least jump back up a notch or two higher than you were.

When dealing with Google you will want to get used to the movements or you will worry yourself to no end.

IMHO as long as you have good intentions you are fine.

Not sure if this is great advice, but I stopped trying to worry about SEO results in the early stages. The first few times I really worried about tracking it I was bouncing all over the place almost daily. I'm sure it was from not doing enough of certain things, but now on sites that I'm not rushed on, i start waiting until I get stuck somewhere, where my rank is somewhat steady before I start stressing over it. It was just too painful to feel like I was making improvements and to drop.

As far as over doing it, well of course you can in the eyes of search engines, but also consider your readers. No matter how interested in the topic, you can get carried away with the term.

I will second the thought that you can't possibly build enough manual links to cause any concern with Google.

If you stay white/grey hat nothing to worry about

      hey,
This is not unusual at all, ive had it happen numerous times and the main reason is not that you did ne thing wrong it is more likely that you did too much too fast and therefore google views this as "awkward" and will push you back a little for the time being. You can't necessarily do too much SEO but you can do too much too fast. Pace yourself a little and google will find your site to be much more "real" and not just a spammed website.
      Hope This Helps

wow I can't believe people are saying to build links slowly still. Yes agreed if you're not using automated software then there is no way you can build too many links to fast. I average around 100 links per day for a new site then when I hit around 1400-1500 links I get lazy and enjoy seeing my sites on page 1 for many keywords. Now if you're using xrummer or senuke then you might have a chance at building links too fast due to them spamming out roughly a few thousand within minutes of work. That I feel would be overkill.

Remember, SEO is a long-term proposition. Don't get caught up in the daily positioning of your site. It'll only cause frustration as Google split-tests their results constantly. Instead, focus on meeting the Big 3 criteria of

    1. Relevant Content
    2. Recent Content
    3. Authority Content (aka content with back links)

...oh, and don't forget to have fun!

Looks like the normal "google dance" to me, sites are going up and down in rankings all the time....also, as others saids, SEO is something where results come long-term, so observing site SERPs really only makes sense over a longer time frame and NOT on a "day per day" basis. Same with Clickbank sales stats etc..

      Yeah

... this has been my experience. As I have created sites they go off on a google dance, then settle for a while and maybe go off on another dance again, sometimes for a few days, sometimes weeks .. but one good thing to come out of it is that it made me ask myself what needed to be done to improve the sites and I found something else to learn about and improve my skills .........and so it can be a good motivator

If I had built just one site maybe I would have been frustrated to hell but when you have 'a few on the boil' it is so much more fun!

It depends if it is on site seo or off site seo. I am not sure on this so dont take my word as stone. Over doing off site seo (BL etc...) will effect you. Doing on site seo, like linking keywords to relevent articles on your site, H1 tags etc, the use of bold, I think google doesnt mind that.
