Has anyone done this successfully? I mean, I know I can backlink, but has your backlinking worked to see a rise to the first 1-5 positions in Google for a competitive keyword (3 million results no quotes, 200k with quotes).

How long did it take you and what was your strategy?

Finally, do you have to worry about backlinking too quickly since it is on a existing site? Google is pretty smart - I wonder if they match number of backlinks to number of views to see if anything is out of whack?

You would have to put in a lot of time to get in the top 5 for a keyword that competitive.

You should go for a variety of different backlinks to rank for a super competitive keyword like that.

Go after the easier keywords 1st then go after more competitive ones.

Post your articles on authority web 2.0 content sites they'll give you better backlinks than article directories

    Hi,

Yes, backlinking to articles DOES work to increase your rankings. I've never seen a problem with building backlinks quickly to my ezinearticles - EZA is obviously a very established site that receives TONS of new backlinks day in and day out.

You should check out this thread here for a cool experiment Terry Kyle is doing (if you haven't already).

    Good luck!
    Chris

EDIT: P.S. It doesn't matter if the number of results for that keyword is 3 million or 300 million with or without quotes...you really need to examine the seo strength of the top few pages in detail to determine how difficult (or easy) it will be to beat them out. Hope that helps!

One thing about going for the broad keywords, at least what I have found being involved in a couple of very large, competitive niches, is that you must build authority for the related and sub keywords in order to show expertise for the main, broad keywords.

Meaning that if you concentrate on the sub-keywords (long tail etc..) you are building authority for the main keywords.

So if you are going for "box" you would start by going for long tailed versions such as big boxes, red boxes, cardboard boxes etc... while going for "box" also.

By securing these related phrases you show that boxes are your area of expertise.
Yes I know you can backlink your way to broad terms but by ruling the underlings you are stabilizing your SERPs all the way around. At least that has been my experience to date and what my top competitors seem to have.
