I believe quality content and back links from higher ranking sites will probably help.

Why do you want to raise the rank of your site? I don't see much point to that, unless you are planning on selling links on your site.

If you look at Google PageRank patent, the answer to your question is "get more backlinks"

There used to be some tools that would tell you how much of a boost you got from certain links. i've always been told links from higher ranked sites is the best way to improve page rank. I need to start worrying about that with my directories.

Getting more one way back links will get your page rank up, but do not focus on building page rank. Unless you are selling links, page rank does not put money in the bank. Instead focus on driving traffic and increasing your conversions.

  backlinks will help increase your pagerank but ranking for your key terms is more important. I use to be a PR3 now I am a PR1 for one of my sites. I don't know what google did. BUT, i am ranking higher for some of my key terms and my traffic has jumped significantly.

Get backlinks with anchor text from trsuted sources mainly. I have to also ask though, why do you want PR?

Maybe you could use one of the link exchange sites or you can even get the automated software for the link exchange.

You need abck link to get high page rank you can create back link by Article Submissin, Directory Submission, Social bookmarking, Forum sposting, blog comment, press relise etc

According to my Google toolbar, Pagerank no longer exists as of yesterday. Anybody else experience this?

  Yes I agree too. Don't focus on page rank. It's a nice to have but it affects just about 20 pct of your search engine ranking. Better to focus on how to get more quality backlinks which in turn will help boost your PR if that is still that important to you.

Social bookmarking. There are 100's or dofollow social bookmarks. Then also submitting articles. There are 100's of place you can submit articles.

Quality content is the first key ..then you may increase your link popularity ..High pr links would do much with your PR ..not sure about SERP ..(for SERP-Try Relevant Links) ..hope it will help!

What you need is good content, backlinks and tons of visitors.. It will then automatically make your page rank increase :-)

  I think the better way to start is to consider the relationship of your website to your readers and the search engines.
  
  To the readers = high value, quality content
  
  to the search engines= good keywords, SEO and other off page ranking factors.
  
  As you develop this, I think the ranks will increase eventually.
