Question about SEO on site redirect

I have a site which is in coldfusion and would like just the main page changed so it shows a new wordpress site. I want to host the wp site on another server of course since our server runs CF.

So will going from:

http://www.mydomain.com redirect default page to

http://site.mydomain.com toast the many years of indexing bla bla on the main site?

I know this is a strange question but Wordpress is best left on our host on another server IMO.

Thanks

Theoretically, as long as you use a 301 redirect, your rankings should be maintained.

If the location is the only thing being changed there shouldn't be any effects, however since you're switching to a WP site, you might actually see some improvements.

I would change as little as possible on the new site as far as content and links go until the new location is showing up consistently in the serps, then you can start updating content. This will let you identify the cause of any negative effects more easily than f you did everything at the same time.

    Good luck!

301 redirect should work. Since it's a new site, you may see a dip initially until the SE's figure out the content is better than what it used to be.

Thanks, I will use a coldfusion 301 redirect tag for sure.

It won't happen for another week but I really appreciate the advice.

I'm in the process of moving a site too, and it's new to me... so... once I have the redirects in place, can I delete all the content on the old site? I would imagine the search engines would ignore the old one anyway?
