IMHO there is no need (or real benefit) of submitting to directories. Although you can buy 500 directory submissions for dirt cheap I just don't see any benefit at all. Several years ago yeah...but now, they just don't work for me.

Web directories are very useful to attract visitors to your website. Web directories have been around since the beginning of the internet.

spammy directories work no more. But Dmoz & Yahoo directories are considered good for traffic and authority.

Directory submissions is not dead and still a good way to get backlinks and a lot depends to quality of the directories that you are submitting your sites to.

  • I agree! Although the visitors to directories are real good but people are making rumors that directories are not prevelant and useful as SEO point of view.

I still think that they can get you huge exposure. Just try submitting to directories where the traffic is real good and Alexa is high as well.

Following the principle of link diversity, it would make sense that one would use directories. Having said that, it is good practice to keep a running list of the quality directories out there (this of course is subjective, but the usual suspects are PR, authority, stickiness of links, etc) and submit to those, particularly when you are launching a new site.

      Quoted for truth.

DMOZ - absolutely if you can get it.

Yahoo Directory - depends on the niche

Other Directories... tread lightly, but don't rule it out.

I have owned directories for many years now.

W/o any data regarding their benefit for SEO, I will say that business right now is better than ever.

I know most directory owners report a slow down in business and this increase in submissions to my directories could be due to my promotion efforts.

In general I think that directories still have a place in web site promotion.

Here's my take on directories as they currently stand: if you take two sites and do identical work for both of them, but add directories to site #2, it might have a very slight advantage over site #1. It won't blow it's rankings up, but that 2 or 3% could edge you over the competition.

There was recently a link-building article with a bunch of top SEOs being interviewed on their favorite techniques- Rand Fishkin and Aaron Wall among them. All of them listed DMOZ, Yahoo and BTOW as a standard part of their link building efforts.

I agree Chris. Submitting your site to 500 low quality directories is a waste of time. Submitting to a handful of quality directories like the one's you list is helpful. Personally I like romow.com

I think that submission to Yahoo! and DMOZ (if you can get in) are still valuable. IMHO submission to various lower value directories are good for link diversity. But I wouldn't count on them to bring authority to my site.

I may break my record today for paid submissions received at my directories.

No question that some SEO's still use them.

If the page in the directory is indexed in google, doesn't have too many outgoing links on it, and is on a higher quality directory I will submit to it (usually via paid submission). I have been doing this for years on my main niche sites and it helps give me more types of links coming in.
