SEO help with index pages and redirection

Hi everyone!

I'd like a little help as to how exactly should I redirect my pages and stuff.

I heard that redirection is bad for SEO, but are all types of redirection bad?

Say I have this page: http://www.mysite.com/index.htm

How do I make that page location be simply: http://www.mysite.com/ instead?

Also, should I include the: www. part? or omit it?

I heard that, all that matters is that you make sure that all your links all point to the same location, so that it's rankings isn't split up.

Please tell me the best way of changing:
http://www.mysite.com/index.htm to -> http://www.mysite.com/

Without hurting my SEO.

My page is actually more like: http://www.mysite.com/homepage.php
So then, how do I change:
http://www.mysite.com/homepage.php to -> http://www.mysite.com/
Safely?

Any other tips on dealing with SEO and URL links will be much appreciated.

Thanks for your time and help!
-Andrew

    If you are using wordpress you can just install a plugin. I like "redirection". If you are not using wordpress then you can either edit your .htaccess file or go to your domain server host and set up a redirect in the cpanel.

    There are lots of options, however all of them depend on what technology you are using.
