For my website, I build links with articles and blog comments.

I have never built a back link for an article before. What do you do?

How many should you build? Will just a couple do for a small niche to get your article from page 2 of google to page 1?

Do you build back links to all the articles on all the directories you submitted to, or just concentrate on the naturally highest ranking article?

When i write an article and feel that its worth some exposure and should rank well, the content firstly needs to be written in that way.
I try to write something similar or rotate the content and submit the rotated articles to article directories, linking back to the main article with the targeted keywords. This is where the best exposure is given.

Then there are other ways like social bookmarking where the particular article page can be popularized as published story, and may that be a small or big niche, reaching to the top position, and maintaining that position are 2 different challenges. SE rankings can be influenced by many tricks, so just one-time work won't keep you on the top for a long time. Keep promoting, inter-linking and try to write more on every topic.

I don't know if I would want to write an article to promote my original article.
But thanks for the social media tips. Aren't most of them nofollow links though?

there is no fun in writing a article and just submitting. u still need to give it a boost to get it in ranks -- may be some bookmarking -- some comments --depend on nature of keyword

Social bookmarks are great. I have my own it will give you seo juice. You can also use jootz.com and it has like 6 dofollows on the right hand side as well.

Do as many as you can but spread them out over time like a couple a week. good luck

I have used some forum profile links before, but I think social bookmarking is going to be your best bet.

Yep, as the 2 posters above me mentioned, just use social bookmarking. For added benefit, target a specific keyword when you bookmark and you will increase on the search engine for the keyword. A great free program to use is socialmarker.com Best of Luck!
