Domain Names and Search Engines

Hello;

This seems like a basic question, but I've never been able get a good answer to it.

From a search engine standpoint, is there any reason to register other TLD extensions for your domain? i.e. .net, .org, etc. for a .com name?

Also, does anyone have a guide or reference that can help me choose SEO domain names.

Thanks very much.

    Some say that SEs give importance to .org domains. However, I don't really focus on this idea. For me, as long as your domain is SEOptimized, all would be okay.

      Stick with .com as much as possible. There are several sites that can help you find names...I often use nameboy.com. You enter the keywords and can find domains available using the keywords.

      Caution! ...and this is important. If you go to a domain registrar's site and search to see if various domain names are available, when you find one you want, register it right then. There are companies who will snap up any name searched for - it's a temporary registration but can drive you nuts if you go back the next day to get that domain.

        HI,

        I've heard of this and wondered if anyone really did it(stole registrations). I normally search for my domains from a logged in account with a good registrar. I had been using BulkRegister, but they got sold, and now I am using Moniker, and there is no way they would try and steal a domain. There is a big name registrar that I suspect might try this scam...

          It happens frequently - and it's not really stealing. It's a business model though marketers don't care for it much.

          Companies just temporarily register domains that people search for - it's assumed the reason is to make you pay a higher price if you want to buy it but it may be only to register "searched" domains in the hope they might be worth more.

          At any rate, the temp registration drops off after 5 days or so as they let the domain go - usually.

          Can really tick you off when it happens - but easy to avoid if you register right away.

    Jamie,

    For SEO stick with .com, .net, or .orgs. I rarely see .infos, .us, .biz, etc or any other TLD ranking in a significant position. There's also the inherent familiarity that comes with the popular TLD domains...I know I'd be suspicious if I saw a .mobi that tried to sell me something
