Just started my first adwords campaign this week and it seems like the first page bids went way up for saturday. is there a different standard for the weekends like print advertising or is this something else I don't know about since I'm still in my first few days?

Google does not control and adjust the system. Advertisers do.

So whether your CPC is $0.30 or $3 per click, the main driving force behind this is ourselves and the laws of supply and demand.

The whole Adwords system revolves around the quality score. The main component of QS is your click rate. If your QS is lower, you will pay more and be asked to pay more to get on the first page. You are competing with other advertisers so what they do to affect their QS positively or negatively will also affect you: your position and your cost. In other words, you can stand still but you will still be affected in some way.

The Adwords FAQ may have more answers for you.

And advertisers may reduce bids or stop campaigns on weekends.
