help with rss feeds

Hi everyone. I have been playing around with rss feeds and trying to figure them out. They are still very confusing to me. But I was told that I can submit my rss feed to feed directories for extra backlinks. So, I've been doing that. Problem is, once I submit them to a directory, I can't find them anywhere on the site.
Basically my question is, how do I know that a website has my feed somewhere on it? And a lot of the sites that were recommended to submit the feed to, have no place to submit them.
Anyone that can explain exactly what an rss feed and how it works would really help me out.
