How do you check to see how many backlinks your site has?

Was looking at one of my websites today that is slowly climbing its way to the top of the search results. I picked a fairly competitive keyword phrase and was indexed on page 16 a week ago. I'm now on page 4 right about to turn over to page 3.

My question is when I check links to my site using both the SEO quake tool, and by searching link: in Google for my website neither show any links... but my site is steadily climbing.. Is there a solid way to check how many of my backlinks have stuck?

Thanks, backlinkwatch.com is exactly what I needed....

Something interesting there though, I checked my site and it says there's 158 backlinks, however most of them are from 1 website that I posted once on.. Turns out my link (although isn't seen) is on over 130 different pages of this website via 1 post. That's pretty neat

I'm using altavista. It checks Yahoo backlinks. Also it's useful to check on Google from time to time (although it shows not the whole number, just a part) and Backlinkwatch is quite good coz it shows anchor texts of the links, but it can only show up to 1000 links.

Just bear in mind that any backlink-checking service is only going to show you a small fraction of the actual backlinks that your site really has. I just use the checker in Google's webmaster tools. They only show a TINY number of your actual links (so that you can't figure out how Google finds and indexes links), but when Google indexes a link of yours, it's a good indicator of the type of link Google respects.

I spent endless hours trying to build back links and was frustrated for a long time because so few of them got recognized by Google. But now I've got a better idea of the types of links they like, and the sites that they "count."

  • If you use Firefox, SearchStatus is a nifty addon that can tell you the backlinks of whatever page you're on (including you're own, of course) instantly.

SearchStatus | Firefox SEO Toolbar Extension

And the SEO Toolbar from SEOBook.com is good for a more in-depth analysis...
