If you do certain searches, sometimes local businesses will show up in the a little map in the #1 SERP.

How do you get your businesss into that? My families Jewelery business has been around for over 20 years and we do not show up when you search for our city/ jewelers...

Can anyone help me out?

    Hi there,

As is often the case, Google can give you your answer. Just do a search for ``how to get listed in Google maps`` Hope that`s what you`re looking for.

That is a good way to start, but you might also want to look into hiring someone to do some on site SEO for you and they can help you get that listing.

If you have a google email account...you can sign into IGoogle. In there you will find Google Local Business Center....click on that & your on your way...

Keep in mind that just because you ad your business to Google Local...your business may not show with-in the "top-10". It take a little knowhow to do that. Focus on your keywords...

Look on youtube...there are a bunch of video's that show how to place your local listing correctly...

    Good luck...

There is a lot more to it than just registering
        your business with Google Local.

For starters make sure you do everything on the
        page where you register.

The the videos, the images, the categories.
        Submit everything they ask for.

Many people will also tell you to key word stuff
you business name on the reg. forum, DON'T Do IT!!

I would also recommend signing up at as many
directories as you can like Merchant circle, All The Web
and many others. Just do the free sign ups, but again
        submit everything you can.

Also get people to start giving you reviews
        especially on Google Local.

Don't forget Yahoo and Bing, it actually helps your
        Google Local listing.

Do that and you will be on the first page and stay there.

Another tip is to make sure your business address is being published on other sites. If you are doing things like article marketing, building blogs, etc., it helps to mention your physical address.

The more Google sees your address appearing elsewhere, the more credibility it gives your listing.

Not meaning to self promote, but I do have a course on at least 9 points of criteria involved in getting ranked in maps.google / local.google...

There is a volume of information online, let me give you an overview summary right here:

    1) Need an address near the center of the map displayed for your GEOtargetted search phrase...ie; manhattan chiropractor, etc...

Note: there are a rare few instances where a city or suburb + the industry search term doesn't trigger a 7-box...for those a keywordrichdomain.com + an optimized WP blog + a little publishing, social bookmarking etc will often do the trick to hit top ranks...

    2) Business name that has the keywords in it will significantly help things.

NOTE: Maps.google's listing guidelines recently changed to mention specifically they do
NOT want to see keyword stuffing in the business 'name'

    3) Keywords in domain helps

    4) Listings in other relevant business/ratings directories seems to be a Quality Signal

    5) Traditional SEO (aka backlinks & anchor text) helps

...there are some other things and I don't mean to pour it on for a monster of a post here, but if you're hitting these basics above you should "definitely" see some traction...based on my past experience for myself and clients.

    Hope this helps,
    S
