Hi guys. I'm totally newbie at IM. And now trying myself in aff. marketing.

So, let's say I've found good product to promote with affilate program for it. Let's say it's called "mega nanonitrous clock".

Next step is to determine competition, right?
So I type "mega nanonitrous clock" (without quotes) in Google and get 300000 pages. Then I type "mega nanonitrous clock" (quoted) and get 25000 pages. Then I put "mega nanonitrous clock" in Google keyword tool and get 2000 searches per month.

Well, it looks good and promising, right? (if no, then please tell why).

Next step is to analize real competitors, yes?
So #1 result in G was "amazon.com" with page for "mega nanonitrous clock". #2 result was website about "mega nanonitrous clock" but it doesn't sell anything.
#3 was ezine article about "mega nanonitrous clock", #4 - link to well-known general forum were "mega nanonitrous clock" were discussed along with other stuff like footbal, cars and so on...

Now I decide to play hard and get domain with keyword.
Questions:
1) Is it time for it? I should I do more research (if so, then what steps should I make)
2) Is it wise to invest in domain with keyword in it?

Well, I'm trying to register "megananonitrousclock_com" but it's busy with "domain is for sale" mark. So .org and .net do. Then I see "mega-nanonitrous-clock.com" is free and get it. Is is still powerful like "megananonitrousclock.com"? Is it more powerful than "www_freehosting_com/megananonitrousclock/" ?

Ok, I got domain. I'm not going to build community, content, etc... The only thing I want - sales. So my site is simple WP blog with review of "mega nanonitrous clock" and affilate link.
The question: can that site (one-page) be at first positions of google? Or large content is a must? (we don't discuss how pretty my site looks from potential buyers view. It's all about google for now)

Next thing is I post to google/yahoo my sitemap and waiting them to index my site. Right? Along with that I do social bookmarks...

What's next? Backlinks I guess... (right?) So, I launch SEO spyglass and enter #1 competitor in search results... Amazon_com. And get 121212321 of backilinks. what?? I'm I really need THAT amount of backlinks to beat them?

Here I'm stuck. Looks like I don't undestand something... Please explain.

In other words, the whole point of thread is "teach me how to promote small-niche product from the scratch using my own domain: lesson 1: determining real competition; lesson 2: planning actions to beat competition".

Thank you for patience and looking forward to your advice.

PS: Merry Christmas, warriors!

PS2: had to replace "." with "_" because forums thinks than I'm trying to post links although I disables "Automatically parse links" option.
