What Ranks Better - Internal Linking or External Links?

I know it's important to do both but what holds more weight with Google - internal links or external links?

When checking for competition in certain niches I can see some sites that may not have hardly any external links but quite a few internal links like ezinearticles.com.

Some of the articles have 0PR and no inbound links other then a ton of internal links.

So how hard would it be to outrank a article from EZA that has thousands of internal links but no external links? Or is it that EZA has weight due to site age and trust factors another site might not have yet?

IT all depends on the site and what google thinks of it. It is safe to say that it is very important to just do both types of linking.

External links are far more valuable than internal links.

They have to be, since it's way too easy to build internal links. You could just make a script that creates millions of pages on your website, all with anchor text optimized links to the page you want to rank.

From what I've seen, internal links can be good as a reference for associating a page with a certain keyword. Beyond that, what you see with listings of EZA articles is due to the domain age, authority and domain backlinks EZA has.

I think external links are more valuable as these links can carry with them High PR link juice coming from other sites.. Whereas, internal links just distribute your PR to all the pages of your site if they are all linked to each other..

Thanks everyone... so would you say that it could be fairly easy then to knock out an EZA article that has no external links if you keep building a pretty steady set of external links then, even if the EZA article is on page one in the 1-3 position?

EZA is an authority site. An article there will be a PR6 straight away with no links at all.
