Alright, I need some help guys. Right now I know I don't have any backlinks for a particular site I'm working on, but I would like to know a good tool to use to check backlinks after I get to work on it in a week or so. All I'm coming across are tools that don't work, or tools that I can't afford to pay for right now.

Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks a bunch,

-Sean

I have to agree with qkz283, the best option I could recommend for your own site would be to set up Google Webmaster Tools.

To help with your link building campaign I would use a tool like SEO SpyGlass (who still have a $20.10 discount) and use this tool to gather backlink information about your ranking competitors.

Why SEO SpyGlass.. possibly the cheapest option that returns a great number of backlinks (depending how many the site has) but I have personally had results where it gathered well over 10.000 backlinks for a particular site.

And no, I do not work for, get paid by, or provide you with an affiliate link for this product.

Matt Cutts suggested using Yahoo's site explorer

    related to that question is:

in several other threads I've seen people ask "why are my back links not showing up"

there seems to be on definitive answer to that... Matt Cutts said in so many words that if he answered that he would be revealing Google's "secret sause".

the short answer to "why are my back links not showing up" is that some of them take a while to "show up", others might be in what used to be called the "supplemental index" (not sure if there is one any more).

no one service, it seems is willing to or able to show you all of the back links you actually have.

so... don't get discouraged if you create em and you don't see immeadiate results.

      Hi,

Not sure if this is what you want or need, but I use SEOQuake which is free to download. You do need to be firefox though.

It can look at a sites backlinks, and see which are follow or no follow - there is a whole load of other information on it which frankly I do not really understand.

It gives the URL of the backlinks, its strength of PR, follow or no follow, internal and external links, all sorts.

I find it quite useful, actually.

I used to used the Yahoo Site Explorer, but I heard a few days ago that Yahoo is cancelling this service?

Anyways, I went back to using the SeoQuake plugin that I installed on my firefox. All you have to do is right click a page and go to "page info".

It tells you more than enough information and also has an option to check your keyword density.

An A+ tool that I keep handy daily!
