This Website Stumps My SEO Abilities

I am reasonably experienced with SEO, and usually achieve the search terms I am looking for, but my website Buy Tea Tree Oil has me absolutely stumped. I have been trying for high Google SERP for over a year now. I have achieved as high as 11th position, but it always drops well into the hundreds.

Any suggestions?

Your keywords are too generic, like shampoo, dandruff, athlete's foot, cold, flu etc. Instead look for some longer keyword phrases using something like Google's KeywordTool: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. Input "tea tree oil" and you will find out what kinds of products people are looking for online.

As an example, "Tea tree oil shampoo" had 3600 US searches last month for that exact phrase. "Tea tree shampoo" has 9900, and while you do have that phrase on the appropriate page on your site, again you've got a lot of unnecessary generic words that you can get rid of.

Make the keywords a maximum of 20 too.

Of course, there's a lot more to it than that, for example finding out how much competition you have, but hope this helps you a bit,

      Thanks for the post Lynn,

I am not a Newbie, though. I usually get my exact phrase in the top ten, if not #1. This site just stumps me. I have no idea why I cannot get top rankings, even for "buy tea tree oil", which I have the dot com for.

        Hi MeJohn,

I noticed you have a good page rank and relative articles, but add some more long tail articles for the SERP's.

What I did notice is that you do not have a link to a Privacy Policy or a sitemap, is this something I missed or have you not added them yet?

You did not miss them. I do not have them yet.

This might be an oversight, but you don't have the term "buy tea tree oil" in your keywords meta tag. Looking at the competition, none of the top 20 sites in Canada using that term have it in their title AND description AND H1 tag. If you make sure you have it in all three then I think you'll have a good chance of getting in the top ten.

selling tea tree oil online is pretty hard, you can pick it up right at CVS or Walgreens , I tried selling it for toenail fungus online and failed horribly

            Hi MeJohn,

If I may pipe in here...

Your site looks terrible in Firefox. Bear in mind that what looks terrible to me as a web developer may not look actually terrible just not so good to the general public .

If I was in the market for buying Green Tea Oil...your site would not elicit much confidence in me as being a site that I would want to buy your product through.

Unlike with Adsense sites which in general should not be made into super duper wonderful looking sites...a site trying to sell me something should look ecommerce like in being top notch (in my opinion). People may end up giving you their credit card. Your site has to make people trust that you will take their info and protect it properly and otherwise fulfill their order.

A poor looking site does not elicit that trust from site visitors I don't think.

Not that such has any real bearing on your site ranking but I thought I would mention it for what it was worth.

Selling it was originally my focus, but now I am just after the traffic. Adsense pays well in the long haul.

Perhaps you need to work on lining up what is there now with the focus you have now?

A site that used to have one focus but that now has changed focus might be losing out in being...well...disjointed somewhat if it is not lined up with the present focus of the site owner .

Personally I wouldn't concern myself with ranking at this point as much as in refocusing your site tightly and improving it. After that I would shift to trying some SEO again.

              Just a thought.

    Dear friend ,
as i see your site...and as other says..check for more longer but specialized to your site.
and also i should have to mention that it's better to find some Action keywords or brand keywords which are more profitable..and those visitors are going to buy something or want take action something.

The truth is that this site's income level and potential is small compared to other sites I am working on. It has just been a thorn in my side for quite a while now.

Then may I suggest further that it might be worth dropping it?

Perhaps you can sell the domain to someone or just use it to link out to some of your other sites that are somewhat related for any link juice it might give you. Or just outright abandon it.

Perhaps it makes no sense for you to sink more time into it at this point if you have little interest in doing what it may take to achieve top ranking with it (given it's apparent lack of potential).

Sometimes...a particular site is just not worth the hassle.

    Ok, being totally honest here:

Tea Tree Oil Information - Acne Relief, Toenail Fungus and More

The site has MANY problems, i dont even know where to start.

The design and wording, the headlines.

Lets start witht he headline "Tea tree oil uses and information" <-- is totally OFF since i can assume that a site visitor wants to BUY TEA TREE OIL....but there is nothing in any of the site elements in regards to actually buying tea trea oil.

Then after that fuzzy headline the first thing shooting in my eye is a LINK TO ANOTHER SITE "buy soap nuts"...which is all the way on top. Like you cant wait to get people off your site with this BIG link directing them to click to the other site right away after they came to your site.

Still no tea tree oil to buy....probably 75% of all visitors already left the page at this point.

What follows is a generic article about tea tree oil and shampoo and fungus.

No matter how i look at the site: THERE IS NOTHING closely related to buying tea tree oil.

If you want google to rank this site for buying tee tree oil then you also have to provide the very same thing...or at the very least provide a list of where people can buy and purchase advice.

The big problem with your site is you are shooting for a buyer's keyword but totally fail to actually deliver what the keyword means...i actually would be extremely surprised if you would rank for "buy tea tree oil"...and Google sees the same thing and in this case Google is right.

If i look for "buy tea trea oil" on Google i expect a site coming up where i can do exactly this. You made the mistake to assume that simply using that KW and the domain would automatically rank your site..but in this case (and especially with BUYing keywords) its not that easy.

Do me a favor and go on google and enter "buy plasma tvs" or whatever other product and see whats coming up.
