Individual Blog Posts SEO Confusion

So I am kind of a newbie and am a little confused about SEO for an individual blog post. For example, is it bad for many of my blog posts to target the same several keywords or is this the correct way to do it?

Also, lets say I have a good keyword phrase I want to "work in" a particular blog post, do I then work on getting backlinks to the link to that particual post, or keep working on getting backlinks to my blog home url?

Also, is linking internal to my other blog posts bad or good?

These are a few of the things that I am confused on, any insight would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

Marcus

    Hi Marcus,

I always try to target a DIFFERENT keyword phrase for each blog post.

I spend a lot of time choosing a couple of good phrases (with a decent number of searches) for my HOME page and when I build links, I build most of them to my home page using one of my target keywords in the anchor text. The links to your home page will also help the ranking of other pages on your website provided you have a good linking structure on your site.

For BLOG POSTS I choose something much less competitive, because I know that I am not going to get as many backlinks to the individual posts as I do for my home page. I usually pick one low competition phrase for each post, place the phrase in the blog post title and 2-3 times in the post, depending on the length and I will try to get a couple of backlinks to that post e.g. from social bookmarking.

Linking internally on your site is good practise and if you can use the keywords for the page that you are linking to in the anchor text then this will help.

Hope this helps and doesn't confuse you all the more

    Cheers,
    Suzanne
