Keyword research help

Hi,

I am fairly new here and trying to define SEO strategy of my web site. I am performing a keyword research, but got confused somehow. I am using Google Keyword Tool and looking for certain keyword search volumes in order to figure out which keywords to optimize my site for. What I am checking there is the Local Search Volume vs Global Monthly Search volume. In some cases LSV is greater than GMS which gives me the idea that the keyword is rising in search engines = better to invest. Is that approach reasonable?

Another confusion for me is the difference between Google Keyword tool and another tool I found WordTracker. According to Google, X6 has the highest search volume, whereas it's 9th in the list according to WordTracker. According to Google, Nokia X6 doesn't have almost any significance, but it's 2nd in WordTracker's list. Why is that?

I would be really glad if someone could tell me what I am doing wrong here, or a better way of doing this research.

Thanks in advance!

Both of those tools are not accurate and they should just be used to give an idea. Don't take the searches and think that is what it is.

You can also go to Google Trends and put in that keyword to see the history of the search volume. That will help narrow it down.

The only true way to get accurate searches to make an Adwords campaign for that keyword. Just bid enough to get on the first page results. You arent really trying to get clicks. After a few days then you can see how many searches for the keyword there were. Keep in mind that your ad might not display every time. But this gives a more accurate way of getting searches. The few dollars you spend on this can save you ton of time and money if you don't do and then spend months ranking for a keyword through SEO only to find that nobody is searching for that keyword.

  • Optimize your site around a theme and just write good content the keywords will fall into place.

Pick a handful of top performing keywords to use in Titles and Headings then forget about it.

Just because you include some exact phrases doesn't mean you will rank for them. Google is pretty good at determining what is normal and what is forced... they have billions of pages to analyze to help.

And ranking is so much more than keywords.

If you want an idea that you are targeting correctly put adsense on your page... even if you don't plan to use it long term on the page and if the ads match your content then you are on the right track.

Keywords are the most important thing for targeting traffic. If you just blindly write content nothing will rank. You have to have a plan with keywords....

Download market samurai free version (you can do keyword research).

They have some free tutorials as well...this is what I recommend for starters
yes i agree, and also with your choice of market samurai.

BUT...google got a lot more "intelligent" in recent years..so if you write an article "on topic" its basically a given that the related keywords will give it a boost to..even if you dont use the EXACT keywords. Google values related keywords in regards to a subject and it can figure out what the article is about. A good article on topic will therefore always "kind of" rank well.

  • I am still using the Google adwords tool. Some of the times i get some problem with the way it shows results.

Even Google disclaimer is that the data shown in the tool might not be accurate. Still i use it
