Which comes 1st - site redesign or PPC traffic?

Got a new web design client who wants to spend some money on PPC ads across my state - but his site needs updated too.

Should I update the site THEN start PPC, or vice versa? What are the pros/cons each way?

Thanks!

  • Jeez, what is the point in spending money on a site that will not convert. Think about it.

But if your client wants to pay you take the money. Just make sure if it goes south that they knew up front that it was their idea to advertise now not yours.

Well, assuming you're talking about Google Adwords, I'd say deal with the site issues before you start using Adwords.

Google pays a lot of attention to your page quality, and if they decide your site isn't up to the standard they want, they will drop your quality score, which can play havoc with your PPC campaign.

    Just my 2 cents!

The site as it is now isn't horrible - just not a very effective marketing tool. And there's nothing on it to suggest that the business operates state-wide, not just locally.

So I tend to agree with you two - but I have had people tell me that there's also value in just getting traffic to a site and seeing what people DO and what pages they visit. So that's what I'm weighing.

Maybe if I DID do some testing of PPC I could do it for my city only - get that site analysis data and bring it back to the client. Would help guide a site redesign, perhaps.

Thanks! Appreciate other feedback as well.

This is a pretty common sense question, you definitely should redesign the site first or you will be wasting more money.
