Placement Targeting on Adwords .... ???

Hi,
I've been debating whether to try the content network on adwords or not, and looks like I will give it a try but I'm not completely clear on how the placement targeting really works. I know that here you enter URLs of sites where you want your ad or banner to appear, but do I also need to enter keywords or is this type of campaign best left without them?

If anyone can give me some pointers on how to properly create a placement targeted campaign I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.
Charlie.

If you use placement targeting (the best approach in my opinion), you do not have to enter any keywords. In fact, it would defeat the purpose if you did.

Placement targeting is for targeting a specific site, while content network would be were you use keywords to target a wide variety of sites that match up to your keywords.

Hey Thanks a lot guys, that definitely clears it up.

One other question I have is, how does Google evaluate the relevancy factor in placement targeting. If I create an image or text ad promoting a pc optimizer tool and choose geeks.com as one of my targets, it almost seems like the only requirement would be for my ad to be exactly about what I'm promoting and the landing page should reflect that, but it looks like I no longer really need to worry about content so much or keyword density or too much SEO. Am I right in that assumption?

Also as an affiliate I should be able to direct link to the merchant's landing page correct? As long as the image ad or text ad talk about the product itself.

        Thanks
        Charlie.

Google doesn't exactly tell you how they evaluate relevancy factor with placement targeting. But if your stick to properly placing your ads to sites that are as relevant as possible you won't get slapped. There are four ways to identify placements: 'list URLs', 'describe topics', 'browse topics', and 'select demographics'.

You can use all 4 options when deciding where to put your placements. With each search, up to 100 available placements will be listed, with the approximate number of impressions per day listed. You can also refine your search by the type of ad you want to run by clicking on 'Choose Formats'. Select the formats and sizes that you want to use, and Google will refine the list to show only the sites with the selected formats available.

Adwords help actually has some good information to help you with further questions on placement. Here is the link:

With placement and google content network you don't have to worry as much about your landing page keyword density or doing simple seo on your site. Although I do still recommend doing these things because it will help your conversions.

As of right now you can still direct link, with image ads, to the merchant's landing page.

Hope that helps answer your additional questions.
