Bum Marketing And Wordtracker

Hi.

I have read the intro guide to Bum Marketing on bummarketingmethod.

But confused about the Wordtracker tool. According to it there have been 236 searches (I don't know if what time peroid) but on google there have been 481,000 searches. Why the decrepency?

      My name's Mal, and I work for Wordtracker Customer Support. The old and new Wordtracker tools have different time periods - the old toolset is 160 days, and the new tools give you data for 365 days. I have a feeling I can explain the discrepancy between WT and the Google tool, but if you can let me know the keyword you're finding this for, I can give you a slightly more definitive answer!

        Hi.

        I can' remember exactly what search was done above. Doing a search on the free version of WordTracker for "london rental", one of the suggested result is "car rental london uk" produced 22. Does that mean 220,000 searches were carried out in the last 160 days?
        On google there are 2,510,000 results for the same search in the last year. I am just wondering what the 22 stands for?
        And why is there a big diffrernce in numbers between google & Word Tracker?

          Hi there,

          the search counts in the free keyword tool shows the number of times each keyword appears in the Wordtracker database for the last 160 days - it doesn't represent hundreds or thousands of searches, as we report raw figures rather than multiples of search counts. The database contains just under 1% of all US search.

          The Google tool is a different beast in terms of keyword research. Firstly, it's much more geared towards PPC than to SEO, and the numbers shown are extrapolations of a sample of search rather than the actual global search volume.

          Looking at the term 'car rental london uk' in the free Wordtracker tool shows a count of 22, as you say. That same term entered into the Google AdWords tool, using the US as the chosen territory (as this is the same region covered by the WT free tool) shows (with the match type set to 'Exact') a global monthly search volume of 360 - rather than the >2 million you've quoted. Was that figure from the keywords tool, or is it the number of competing pages indexed on Google?

          It's not always easy to find correlation between any two keyword tools, particularly when they're as different as Wordtracker and the Google tool, but the distinct advantage that Wordtracker's subscription tool will give you is that you can get up to 1000 results (rather than the 200 or less that Google will give you), providing access to the longer tail of search in your niche, and you can also save, manage and update keyword lists in the main Wordtracker tool quickly and easily.

          There will always be discrepancies, but remember that Google has not to date released any details of the size of its sample set for this tool (it's certainly not 100% of Google searches) or the extrapolation method applied to achieve the results we see from the tools.
