Google Dance caused by different data centers?

Hi everyone. I have noticed something that sticks to a very particular pattern with a few of my keywords. I have two keywords that are normally the very first search result in Google. However, they will stay there for around 5 days normally, and then for two days will drop down to position number 6 or 7. After two days or so they will go back to the #1 spot.

In trying to figure out why this was happening, the only answer I could come up with is that Google has many different data centers hosting their search engine and they rotate between them. One most of the data centers my search result is in the first position, and on one of the data centers I am in the 6th position.

This is the only answer I can come up with. Does anyone else have any idea why this would be happening? It happens whether or not I'm building backlinks. If I'm building backlinks after about 5 days or my SERP will go down to #6. And if I'm not building backlinks the same thing happens.

It is very aggrivating because there is a huge different in traffic and revenue from #1 to #6, and when I drop to #6 my sales completely dry up. I've come to the conclusion that all the money in Google is from the first couple of search results. If you can't get those SERPS, you won't make any money, IMO. At least in product niches this is what I have noticed.

Anyone have any other theories about this?

I believe it's some sort of re-indexing process. Seems like it's triggered when the site is constantly updated or when there is constant backlink building.

Yeah it just worries the **** out of me. I always think is this the time that my site won't return to its position? And usually after 2 or 3 days it does return, but I'm always left wondering if I'm gonna be stuck at #6 now.

        Hi Jacob,

When it comes to competitive keywords you should expect rankings to fluctuate constantly. One reason is that Google tries to push fresh new content to the top of their search results.

They refer to the technology as QDF (Query Deserves Freshness) and it pushes fresh new content to the top of the SERP for a brief period of time so that if a searcher is looking for a recent event, or the latest information, they will always be able to find it near the top of the search results. This causes a frequent readjustment to rankings on many queries.

The best way to combat this is to become a constant source of fresh new information on the topic of your chosen keywords. If you're going to get pushed down, it might as well be your own content displacing your top ranked page for those brief periods.

Another way to combat it is by persistent and effective advertising and promotion of your web pages. Due to the effects of personalized search, you will have an advantage if can get Google users to visit you page before they doing the next search for your keyword. This places your page into their recent search history and it will automatically rank higher in their personalized search results.

In some cases, particularly for Chrome browser users, you can get an extra boost if you manage to get a user to save your page in their bookmarks.

How am I suppose to secure a decent keyword if when I continue to build backlinks it can't hold its position. I have followed all of the advice that I've gotten and continued to build backlinks even when my SERP is falling. Now I'm in position 10 on the first page and my revenue from the website has completely dried up.

I don't know if its a google dance this time or if its going to stay at the 10th position. I guess this is why I should continue building websites so when one takes a dive the others will carry me.

This just seems hard to do because I spend an hour or two a day backlinking that website.
Is there ever a point when I won't need to continue backlinking? Will my SERP ever hold out at a position? Or will it continue to dip and dive no matter what I do?

      Hi Jacob,

Marketing is like war, you must continue your effort until you or your opponents are completely defeated. As long as your competitors are still in the game you will lose if you give up. Fortunately you can benefit while the war rages as long as you can maintain leadership with a reasonable cost.

While you could build more websites, you really only need to build more pages for your current website. Each and every page on your website could rank for a different keyword. Ideally you want top rankings for hundreds or even thousands of different keywords. When you have that many pages ranking well, the day to day fluctuations of your rankings will average out.

You should also consider marketing efforts out side of SEO. For most serious marketers, search engines only account for 25% to 35% of their website traffic. Those other promotional campaigns tend to help stabilize your search engine rankings in a synergistic way.

Perhaps you should rethink your overall strategy. Much of the advice given on this forum focuses on manipulating rankings for pages that really don't deserve a high ranking. This works well with very low competition keywords, but if you get a few serious competitors you will be forced to continue your rank manipulation efforts indefinitely.

If you create great content along with a well rounded marketing strategy you will be able to earn high rankings that stick. The way to judge great content is by the rate of organic backlinks that you receive. If you have really useful content some of your visitors will link back to your web pages. Great content will go viral and earn a lot of direct traffic links that don't rely on search engine traffic. Those type of backlinks are the only ones that the search engines truly value.

Generally speaking, the only folks telling you that marketing is easy are those that are trying to sell you something. While some things may be quite simple, it typically requires a lot of hard work. The only true path to making it easy is hiring competent professionals to do all that hard work for you.

You must be willing to give a substantial portion of your profits to those that are doing the hard work, or continue doing all the hard work yourself. As an individual, there is only so much you can do on your own. To really prosper you will need a team of competent workers or become an amazingly productive individual yourself.

Two things I would take a look at.

First of all, is your site having similar fluctuations in other search engines? or is it just Google?

Second, what is your competition doing? You need to check into them a little bit. They might be building backlinks too. That could be what is causing you to move up and down. It's not Google. It's the other sites on the first page doing similar things to what you are doing.

Great information and advice. I would also like to add that you sites will stabilize in the future but the reason that they are bouncing around so much is because they are new. I don't know if this was addressed earlier or not. so I thought I would post it.
