Ranking for Longtail Keyword Phrases on Sub-domains - Is the root domain ignored by Google?

I've been reading a lot of posts about using Wordpress MU (multi-user) to create multiple niches using sub-domains on 1 hosting account.

Some people say they can rank well using sub-domains by following these rules:
- Do Not interlink the sub-domains.
- Use unrelated niches.

I understand that Google treats each sub-domain as it's own entity.

My question is:
If I'm creating small niches with longtail keywords on sub-domains, Is the "root" domain keyword taken into account at all by google?

I want to have my "keyword phrase" in the URL

Example:
hxxp://ClassicCars.FordMustang.com
Is "Classic Cars" completely ignored by Google when trying to rank for "Classic Ford Mustang"?

If I stay away from have RELATED niches on the same domain and IP address then I could just Use something very generic like:
hxxp://InternetWorld.KeywordPhraseHere.com

This way I could use the 1 hosting account for anything:
hxxp://InternetWorld.besttoasters.com
hxxp://InternetWorld.memoryfoamshoes.com
hxxp://InternetWorld.electricblankets.com

The question remains though: Would "InternetWorld" be taken into account when trying to rank for longtails in my URL.

Any input is appreciated-

google will take everything into consideration.. any morden search engine will do the same.. think about 1000 factors not 10 factors.. done with machine.. they will consider how long you have registered the domain, shared or self hosting.. and many many other things..

yes I think google will consider every words in your url.. but what is your concern anyway? it does not influence your rank negatively from those samples you showed here..

The "Car" in the first example will help not harm your ranking, IMHO

      Thanks Digigo-

It's really a question of "which way should I go" when I buy a domain name.
If each sub-domain is treated as it's own entity then I would get something very short and generic. - maybe one 5 letter word.

If they do take the "root domain" URL into account, then I need to be more careful when picking a domain name.
