You need a theme that accepts adsense. You will find out f its compatible by going to the appearance settings in admin and there should be a option for widgets.

Widgets are perhaps the preferred method, but you can even place adsense code directly into a post if you like, or if you are more tech savvy, directly into your theme code :-)

Its just javascript after all, nothing more...

Most themes are fine for adsense.

This plugin allows you to add adsense without changing any code: WhyDoWork.com AdSense Plugin for Wordpress

Let me know if you need any help. I advice a 300x250 at the top of the post under the title.

You can either add in the content or use the widget text/html bar, remeber it takes about ten minutes to show up!!!!

Here is a great free WP theme you can download called bluesense click here you have to add the adsense code directly into your theme editor if you don't know how to do this it explains it on the site step by step. It pretty much displays adsense where people tend to click the most and I think Internet Marketer99 and a few other members on here recommend using it. I once had a site on page 81 of Google with this theme and it had earned me more money then 5 sites I had on the first page of Google with only adsense placed on the sidebar widgets section. so it' defiantly worth a test

Just put the adsense code in your theme editor->header. Or if you have an adsense ready theme, they will provide the place to submit your adsense code. Usually in the theme options. Make sure you choose the right banner size to fit your theme

Is it a WordPress.com or a selfhosted blog?

You can get an Adsense plugin - but I would personally recommend learning to code the html yourself.
