Quick Question About Keyword Competition Someone Please Help!

I was doing some keyword research and I was wondering what make a keyword good in terms of ranking on the front page. If I see alot of sites on the first page that have the keyword as their domain should I pass? If I see there is too much competition in quotes should I pass the keyword? Someone told me I should try to rank for words where most of the first page results are subpages and not the main page. Can someone help me to understand better because I am really confused. Thank you.
