How does backlinks rank my blog?

Can someone explain to me how backlinking works?
I'm talking about article marketing where I put links to my blog.

Lets say I have 2 keyword phrases.
I create articles with this keywords and add them to article sites.

Now, for example someone makes a search for "backlinks"
What comes first on the search site. My articles or my blog?

I hope someone understand what I'm talking about.

    Links to your site are like votes for it. If your site gets votes it ranks better. Writing articles is an easy way to generate links to your site.

    But this two keyword phrases that I used in my articles. Do I need this keywords in my blog to?

    Let say I will create about 200 articles in one year and sub mitt it to 100´s of websites. I can use many other keywords as well.
    But should I have exact the same keywords in my blog as I have in articles?

    Maybe a stupid question but I'm quit new in this.

    The keywords in your links help your site rank for searches that use those keywords. It makes sense for the keywords to be on your pages as well
