SEO promotion for more than one country with same website

Hi There,
I have a website focused around design and development services. I want to promote the parent domain which is a .com domain for US market and for other markets I want to promote the .com website with a country specific folder e.g. .com/uk
content and keywords targeted for .com/uk will be entirely different from what I have on .com
I have few questions for the SEO experts on the forum:
1) what problems I may face in terms of SEO?
2: There will be few common terms targeted for different countries e.g. website design. Would it be possible to rank both the websites .com and .com/uk with the same keyword.
3: Would it be in accordance with the google guidelines?
4: Do you recommend using .com/us instead of .com for the US market as I will be using separate folder for each country.
Please advise.
