Placement/Prominence of Content <- How does Google prioritize?

An average blog could have a static front page, say, an article, some kind of sales letter. For example, i could talk about a weight loss diet and talk/recommend this diet on the front page since this is obviously what i want to sell

On the side, i have my categories and widgets for recent postings etc. I could have a good number of "real" and related articles on my blog, accessible via categories...also indexed in the search engines under their url like www. mysite.com/why-exercise-is-bad-for-weight-loss/

My question now is whether google values the articles less since they are less "prominent" as opposed to the sales-page on the front which i see at www .mysite.com
