SEO Against Amazon on Google

I'm hoping to get a little clarification for where I stand on competing against pages like Amazon and Yahoo shopping for product keywords for small Niches.

Using Micro Niche Finder and Market Samurai has caused some confusion in my mind! For a term I am looking at targeting MNF tells me the SOC is 13, which sounds pretty good to me. I then pop the same term into MS and get the results that are shown attached.

Now I have heard that if Amazon is in the top 3, it should be fairly easy to outrank. However, looking at the MS results with the top result being yahoo shopping, and results 2 and 3 being amazon, MS makes the look pretty scary!

The second result doesn't have the KW in the title, URL, description, or a heading, and all of them have relatively little backlinks to page, but the backlinks to domain are huge!

I'd love to hear people's thoughts on how difficult it would be to end up in the first three.

Thanks!
Carney

I dont' worry if the pages are subpages like amazon(dot)com/your_topic_here
I find I can outrank them.

A good way that I've been using to check this is Traffic Travis (which is free). You can find out lots about the top 10 or 20 listings for keywords you type in. I use this after I analyse my keywords in MS... While Traffic Travis is analysing, I'm over at godaddy seeing if i can find a .com domain with those same keywords

Hope that helps. I have to add that I learned this stuff from supersimpleblogging.com (mods - I hope it's okay to put that link here. I just don't want to take credit for someone else's ideas)

      They are outrank-able pretty easily.

I know most Amazon sub pages rarely have more than a few links to them.

It's not really a problem though because everyone searching for those products has probably already been to the amazon page, and are now looking for more 'independent' reviews from other websites.

It's fairly easy to outrank the sub domains. If I see an Amazon page, article site, forums, and/or press releases on the first page of my desired keyword I know it is usually fairly easy to outrank them.

Remember that you want to get within the top 4-5 for your keyword depending on the demographics of the searchers for that keyword. Think to yourself, how likely will these searchers search other pages besides page one of google. I have keywords that would get me like 14 visits a month when I was ranked #8 on page 1 and then once I got to #2 the visits shot up to 10,000 a month!

I feel, amazon is quite easy to outrank. Moreover, other sites such as ebay, and classifieds are even easier.
