How much to charge for SEO work?

I have never done SEO work for anyone as a paid job, so I don't know the rates and how you would go about charging people.
Do you charge a flat rate, or do you do it hourly based on the actual hours of work you put into it, or ...?
I have someone who wants me to do some SEO work for him, but I have no idea howmuch to charge and how to base my rates...?
I would appreciate if anyone could help me out. Thank you.

    Do you have any experience on which to base a rate?

    I charge monthly for my services - can work round most peoples budgets though.

      Is there any average price base... for example for a monthly fee? I mean I understand each project is unique and has its own needs and what have you, but I guess I am just looking for an average kind of pricing base if that makes sense.
