Does This Tactic Help My Rankings, Or Hurt Them?

I subscribed to a link-building service that charges a monthly fee. They require you to set up a "links" page on your site (in .php format) where they can automatically place links from other sites, and in return your link gets placed on the link pages of other sites in their network.

I did this with several of my less-important sites, and I am seeing their # of back links grow at a nice rate. But I've hesitated to do this with my main "money" site. My question is, can all of these outgoing links harm your rankings or de-value your site in any way?

Basically, when you use this service, you'll wind up with multiple "links" pages on your site that fill up with tons of outgoing links from all kinds of websites that are totally unrelated to you.

But on the flip side, all those sites will now have YOUR link on their links page. Is this advisable?

    This isn't a good idea. This tactic was common in the real estate market a few years ago and Google penalized a lot of sites for it.

    Basically, you want to have total control of who you link out to and with this kind of setup, you don't.

    This is a link exchange method. I would suggest you to build a dofollow one way backlinks. After you increase your site PR, you can even charge people to put their links on your site.

        Although Google does not hold you accountable for who links TO you they will hold you accountable to who you link OUT to So this isn't a good idea unless it is HIGHLY monitored by the service. Link to sites known for Spam , illegal activity, Porn etc and you could see a drop of your site in search results.

    How many links are on each links page?

    Is there any intervention on your part, or are they auto allocated?

    You should never have NON RELEVANT links in or out, no random/crappy link exchanges.
