What is Page Rank Anyhow?

I'm a little confused about what Page Rank actually is.

PR0, PR1 ..... how high does it go?

I could use a little primer on the concept of Page Rank. What it means, how it works, and why it matters.

Anyone want to take a stab at explaining it?
#page #rank

IMO pagerank is an indicator of a site's authority..

it goes from 0 and upwards..I've seen sites ranked
    6,7,8,9 - they say blogger.com/blogspot.com ranks
9 if I can remember correctly.

However, G announced last year that they are not
giving much value to PR..However it is still a good
    indicator of a site's popularity..

    Here's the quote from Wikipedia..

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page,[1] used by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references.
Here's the quote about PR's devalued importance..

On October 14, 2009, Google employee Susan Moskwa confirmed that the company had removed PageRank from its Webmaster Tools section. Her post said in part, "We've been telling people for a long time that they shouldn't focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it's the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true." [29] PageRank was still displayed on the Google Toolbar web appliance two days after Moskwa's confirmation.
    All the best,

PR can be from 0-10 not 9

Thanks Jazbo - my eyes were about to pop out of my head with all those Algorithms!

    Now I'm really confused.

Can someone just tell me if your objective is to get the highest Page Rank number?

Being Page Rank #1 (I'm #1) is not as good as Page Rank #5?

    Thanks

It's something that Google came up with that creates hysteria and delusion among many people who own websites.

The PR of your site is largely irrelevant and has no bearing on anything, however, the PR of the sites, or more importantly the pages, that link to you are important.

So - if the PR of the sites that link to me are important, does that mean I'm better off with sites linking to me that are PR8 or PR1?

That's really all I'm trying to clarify here. The higher the page rank - the better - correct?

        From Google's PigeonRank page:
"For each peck, the PigeonRank increases. Those pages receiving the most pecks, are returned at the top of the user's results page with the other results displayed in pecking order."

Yes, you want higher PR links pointing at your sites. PR10 being the highest.

However, it's also important to note that each page has a PR, not just each website, so there will still be PR 0 pages on a PR 8 website.

Although, in my experience a PR 0 page from a PR 8 website is more valuable than a PR 0 page from a PR 3 website, so even if the page linking to you is a PR 0, the domain PR is still important.

          Hopefully that's not too confusing.

I'm pretty sure this was made a few years ago by Google as an April fools joke.

Never mind, I get it. PR0 is nothing, PR1 is better (but isn't the best) and PR5+ is great.

MostlyHarmless: Everyone in this thread is trying to BS you.

Here is exactly what PR is, on Google's own website:

There was a thread or comment on here quoting google or something (man, how vague was THAT?) that discussed about PR being possibly eliminated.

Was I delusional? Does anyone else recall that discussion and quote?

    Warmly,

PR does not carry the Kudos it did a few years back so although others have explained it very well its the 'visitors' you want to worry about getting to your site not really a PR that is only any good if you are either selling your site and you can command a higher premium for it or if you are selling links on your site the higher PR you have the higher the amount that you can charge people.

The key is that Google PR is calculated for each page of your site and the PR of all your pages will participate in the calculation of PR on site.

Thanks for the PR-101 class everyone.

What's the difference between PR and High Authority?

Would the most popular Porn site get a high Page Ranking but Low Authority?

I use PR only as a very quick rough guide to how strong a site is, it means nothing in SEO these days as it is an old technology not used for any ranking purposes, but it's so hard to let go as when you get a good pagerank as apart from a good rank in SERPs it's hard to visualise/pigeon hole a sites strength / status.

My advice is to not factor it into your site plans and do not focus your site goals on acheiving a high pagerank. Concentrate on the site and your visitors and pagerank will come when you get a few good links for having a good site.

Page Rank (PR) is the popularity of a particular page in Google search results. It starts from 0 and moves on till 10. The more the PR, the more authentic the page is and the more its links would be valued. However recently Google has stopped giving much value to PR.
