Your SE Ranking -- Not Nearly As High As You Think!

How many of you frequently visit your website. I only ask because I thought I didn't, but I am constantly submitting articles and making sure the links work -- meaning I check it more often than I'd like. Apparently, this is known to google..... I'll explain why this matters later.

Just recently I checked my ranking for a relatively generic and highly profitable keyword -- I was on PAGE 1, 4th result down. I was ecstatic and filled with joy when I saw this...for a few minutes.

After I calmed down and finished telling my family, I came to a realization -- If im on the first page, why aren't I getting more traffic and as a result, more sales. I did a quick search with the term in my browser...Still There. I said "okay, thats good" But was still very puzzled about the non-super traffic I was getting. After all, a search term like this, with tens of thousands of searches a month would be giving me WAY more traffic than I was currently getting.

My brother, who lives with me, did a search for the term and he said my website was no where on the first page...or the second, or the third. I ran over and noticed he was right. My computer, my browser, I was ranking 4th in google for the term -- His computer, his browser, I was ranking....no where I could see.

I came back to my PC, started up IE (I used firefox) and entered in my keyword at google.... I am NO WHERE for the search term. I go back to firefox....I am still number 4. This was an enormous blow to my ego and self-esteem about my SEO efforts.

It would seem that because I visit my site so frequently, google puts it higher in the search results for me (no doubt due to the cookies on my PC). I did not know this and many of my "triumphs" in the past are not "triumphs" are all -- just superficial evaluations that are none to accurate.

Note: Its not this way for all keywords I noticed, but mainly for some of those "broader" terms you aim for.

The purpose of this post.... How many of you guys check your rankings using the same browser & same PC that you do your work on? Are you getting overly excited about nothing like I have been?

-Sean

P.S. Theres nothing like seeing your website on the first page and then the pain that comes from finding out IT WAS ONLY AN ILLUSION!

OK EVERYONE... let's not freak out. Easy way to see your correct rankings and anyone doing SEO should do this.

    1) Make sure you are not signed into a Google account.

    2) While signed out, go to google and click 'Web History' in the top right.

    3) Turn off 'signed-out search result customization' or w.e it's called.

    4) Now when you search for anything on Google you will be looking at it through the lens of someone who has not built up a web history for that term/niche before.

Should look something like below, except yours will say "Disable" instead of "Enable"

thanks for the reply but I cant get to that page when I'm signed in or signed out. When signed in it only gives me the option to "limit to searches"

How do you get to that page above (in screenshot)

    thanks
    Andy

    maybe this doesn't work for .co.uk ??

I just google search a random term and once I'm viewing a results page I have a text link in the top right that reads "Web History" clicking that link brings me to the page I took a screenshot of : / Hopefully this helps.

I get it now, I was looking for it on the google home page and not on the search results page.

      Found it now thanks

It's good you made this thread, this mistake reminds of all of the new people targeting keywords without "exact match" on >< Hopefully people will see this so they won't be discouraged later on.
