This of course has been discussed before but if you do a lot of digging into google's search results like I do then its nice to see Google confirm again that it uses LSI . In this recent blog Google confirms that search results take into account synonyms and the context of words and admits that they have been tweaking the algorithm to look for more than just the keywords themselves used in a search.

Official Google Blog: Helping computers understand language

Essentially this is Google's way of determining the relevance quality of a post, article page. Computers can't really understand language like Human's can so looking for context and synonyms along with the actual keywords helps Google to identify what it considers a good article.

Bottom line for webmasters is that an article or post can have a lot more to do with just the actual keywords. So it seems it can pay off to have a well written article not just dropping the keywords in various spots.

Interesting, but not really new. It still leaves some questions open, i am thinking about this every day actually when i am looking for "theme relevant" blogs.

Lets assume i have a site about "acne", how does does Google determine relevancy. Is a link on a site about "skin care" relevant? If i have a site about yeast infection, has a link from a site about "menopause" the same relevancy, or maybe a link on a general health site?

Everyone is talking about this "relevancy" score G supposedly has...but its often difficult especially if for the EXACT keyword there is not many sites and you have to go broader. When is it still relevant and when not....

True and it will always be difficult since Google will never fully reveal their algorithm on this. In my testing and examination though I have noticed that the related words in Google's keyword tool and the wonder wheel mentioned before match up with alot of articles that I have seen rank high.

I think Google uses authority sites to determine which sites contain good quality contain on a subject. If the authority says it is good then it must be. Google might then use the content on this sites to create a collection of content of relevant material.

Google also tracks similar searches by tracking user habits and if they find a pattern of a similar series of searches then they can determine if the keywords are related to the same subject or not.

Google has been doing this for a while. I've noticed synonyms coming up in searches.
