Press Release - About to do my first one...

Haven't done a PR as of yet - but will be doing one this weekend. Couple of questions.

If I'm selling pet supplies on my website - should I talk about pet supplies in general and not about what I'm selling? Also, I know that bloggers may do a PR sometimes if they have something really good they posted, but should I do a PR everytime we get a new product in (again, not advertising it - but somehow talk about the subject)?

Congratulations on your business! I don't think there is any "correct" answer to your question. It's all opinion I guess. So here's mine:

Ask your question in a different way to see the answer more clearly: if you were selling new cars would you just write about cars in general and not about the specific cars you were actually trying to sell?

I think writing about specific items you are selling creates a little more hype. In other words, it gives the potential buyer a reason to buy xyz dog leash or dog food or the cat scratch.

There is nothing stopping you from writing a fantastic generalized article on maybe the importance of pet supplies (convenience, health of the animal, showing love for your animals...whatever) AND creating several mini-blitz articles about specific items you are trying to sell.

Example: "Back when I was kid, my neighbor was this sweet old lady who had a German shepard that she loved to death. bla bla bla. One day, our normally quiet street was suddenly full of cars and that caused this lady's German shepard to dart out into the street to chase the cars. If only that sweet old lady had xyz super pet dog leash stay-in-your-yard holder. We don't want another dog to run needlessly into the street and cause a family tragedy. That's why we are offering the xyz super pet dog leash stay-in-your-yard holder to you today for this special price. bla bla bla.

    You get the idea.

As far as announcing each and every time a new product, why not? It's perfect for a site like Twitter, or a page on your website titled "what's new." Plus, to make the PR really noteworthy, and if you can afford it, why not offer percent discounts to the first 10 or so customers who purchases a new item you guys are offering?

Pet owners can be fanatics...they treat their little furballs like family members. If you can be different, and do some wonderfully creative things with your shop, you can attract and keep some loyal customers (and feel good about providing a great service).

Hope my babbling produces something useful for you! The best of luck and best success to you!

Good luck with your first PR, I remember when I did my first one itwas nerve wracking and I was so delighted when it got posted.

Usuallyclueless gave some sound advice and a nice insight into pet owners.

Anyway, what you decide to do will depend on the angle you want to take. what makes your site selling pet supplies different from all the others and what makes your business unique? f there is a particluar lien or brand of product that makes you stand out then absolutely go ahead and mention it.

The more publicity the better, so don't be shy about telling people what you have to share, what's new and what you are up to. Remember if they don't know you are there they won't use your services or buy your products.

      Wishing you all the best.

Check Google News for any recent pet stories and see if you can tie into it. For example, if there was a recent hubbub over a pet food recall (like there was a few years ago), you could say that none of the products your site has was involved with the recall because you deal with only the leading products...yada, yada, yada.

Not the only way to do a PR, obviously, but you have a better chance of wider distribution if there is actually some news in it.
