Duplicate Content Penalty

If I publish an article on my site, then publish it on EZA, will I get a duplicate content penalty. Also, on my blog, I have the original post, then the post shows up in categories, and in archives. I installed Platinum SEO plugin, and set my site not to index archives, but, with duplicate content, in the homepage, in categories, and a few multiple categories, and on EZA. Will I get a duplicate content penalty. Also if people take my article off EZA, and post them on their own sites, will I get penalized there as well?

Also, if I post the article on my website first, will all websites that have my content posted afterwards, will they get the penalty, or will all of us get it?

The truth is that there is no such thing as a Google penalty for duplicate content. In reality what happens is that Google will publish the source from which it was originally posted, so post it to your site first and then other sites

The moment you publish an article on the web , it will be picked up by copyscape. Ezine will reject the content as duplicate. Also if you copy someone elses content you'll be breaking the law

When you copyscape a duplicate item it will show up as duplicated, and the copyscaper can choose to view the who is info for the site owner. If you don't have a private registrar then you will be in the S***!

Also Google DOES penalise for duplicate content - I have tested the theory, and it's true

Not true. What ezine won't take is content that you didn't write.

According to what I preceive in this video, google doesn't necessarily penalize but will certainly give you lower page ranks for duplicate content.

duplicate content penalty is a myth ... It was made up and created so marketers could sell their junk spinners.. There is no penalty and that even includes if you have dup content on your site.

If you create "doorway pages" to game the system then yes you will get a penalty.. Dup content shows up on just about every single site. Many do not realise it but it does and this is especially true for those that use SEO'ed urls with .htaccess..

There is always 2 links to a post/article when dealing with a dynamic site (php) and .htaccess for SEO...

    Example:

Raw url might be : http://www.mydomain.com/article.php?item=3000

And the SEO'ed url would be : http://www.mydomain.com/My_Article_Title-3000

Both point to the same exact content but no search engine is going to give you a penalty for it ... They can tell the difference between a site that uses seo and one that just tries to game the system with things like doorway pages.

Thus which proves duplicate content penalty is a myth and that even includes on your own domain ...

LOL .. What's up Jay ... Hope your new year is going well..

I just wonder when people will start using logic when they hear all these myths... It is not hard at all to use your brain unless of course you have cobwebs and dust, and in that case it is time to clean house...

      Hey James,

First off, you got my respect for all your valuable contributions
      on this topic.

Got a couple of points to add.

Duplicate content penalization is grossly exaggerated.
For example, I got a site that is essentially filled with
duplicate content and still rank in the first page of Google
      for a keyword I'm targeted.

That said, I also have poor SERPS from duplicate
      content as well.

One thing for sure, it is clear Google loves
fresh, high quality, relevant and unique
      content.

      => http://adwords.google.com/support/aw...75&adtype=text

There's a reason why original and relevant
content are one of the factors considered in
landing page quality for Adwords advertiser.

They want their searchers to have a good user experience.

All else equal, I rather have 10 unique, high quality
(and of course human readable) spun articles
as compared to having 10 of the same articles.

While you won't get penalized from the
duplicate content, you are likely to get better
collective search engine ranking as a whole
compared the results you will get from a single article.

Furthermore, with spun unique articles, web 2.0
sites like squidoo and hubpages are likely to
      give you better exposure too.

Actually, since you own a spinner product yourself,
      you probably already know this.

So yep, unique content do matter.
And spinners are NOT evil (if in the hands
      of a good user).

I have outranked sites with original content with my sites with dupe content. Just keep the resource box intact to avoid legal charges and you should be good to go

The sad truth is that this post will not convince many people that duplicate content is a myth. I swear this question comes up everyday and people still don't seem to believe it. All you have to do is type in the lyrics to your favorite song. Notice how ten million results are returned with the same exact song lyrics. If dup content was such an issue we'd only have one lyrics site returning results. Furthermore, why would people republish Ezine Articles if duplicate content was an issue?

This entire reply is FALSE. Copyscape does not pick up material as soon as it is posted to the web. It picks it up when Google indexes the material (which is rarely if ever instant). It also doesn't always pick up the other search engines, so it misses a lot.

Ezine will NOT reject your article if you post it to your site first. If it is your own article, published with the same name).

Google, does NOT penalize for duplicate content (in this context), they penalize for spammy/scraped/useless material that provides no value to a visitor. If you watch the videos above or visit and read Google's tos, you would know that.

Yeah and some of us even block copyscape from scrapping our servers .. If they want to scrape my server they can pay a monthly fee ...

Oh I don't know since they charge Only 5c per search they can pay me 4c per search to scrape my server ...

While true there is no penalty. Think about it this way.

Write a unique article and do no linking
    or
Post a duplicate and do no linking.

Which is likely to rank higher? The unique on of course. Now build links on them. The unique one will always have that much easier of a time ranking, especially if the duplicate appears all over the web.

So yes, there is no penalty. Does it help you much? In most cases, no.

Thanks all, really useful thread. I write my stuff from my brain (not a lot of it either way!), and have been including (c) notices at the foot.

I just discovered yesterday that some article directories don't like (c) stuff. I couldn't see that there would be a dup problem if my own (c) was on an article, and I have no wish to re-cycle other folks's work. However, I don't want to have my stuff scraped. I'm just a low-volume kinda guy ;-)

Not asking a question, just thinking aloud, sorry if thread drift. Anyway, this useful thread answered the question I wanted to ask!
