Here's an interesting article and a video from Google's Matt Cutts:

Has Google Begun Changing How it Indexes the Web? | WebProNews

I'm seeing some shifting in rankings, but nothing too radical just yet. What about y'all?

For all we know Google caffeine could easily be another distraction like page rank :-)

It may be shortsighted but I focus all my efforts on what works now. I haven't seen any major shifts although I do expect sooner or later link building will be on the out.

From your mouth to God's ears! PLEASE let that happen, and soon. Link building is crushing my soul.

      Brad,

That's an interesting observation. Just curious as to why you think link building will be out?

Probably because its becoming more and more easy to manipulate links. In Google's eyes nobody should be building links. They should be coming from other people in a natural way. Not being built by webmasters. I hope linkbuilding sticks around for awhile though.

What other ways will they use to judge a websites relevancy than by looking at its links? I always wonder what the future of the SERPS will look like if they remove backlinks as the main way to judge a websites relevancy.

What do you think will be a determining factor to replace backlinks? Or do you think it will be a combination of everything. (i.e. bounce rate, time on site, backlinks, on page SEO, domain age, backlinks from highly relevant authority type sites)?

Right now as it stands, I'm pretty convinced that relevancy in backlinks is completely unimportant...as many experiments have proven. If anything the relevancy of a backlink is only a slight boost over a nonrelevant backlink.

Always makes me curious. I'm new to IM and I'm just starting to have some success with SEO and stuff....and backlinking is working for me right now. I hope it continues to for awhile at least. It's the only way I know right now to make any money with the only investment being time.

I'd love to see the linking go away. On the one hand, we need to do it, because google makes decisions based on backlinks. On the other, if we do, we risk getting handslapped, because we're not allowed to artificially generate backlinks. Ugh. Plus, they make a point of never telling us the exactly rules for the thing we're not supposed to manipulate, but are forced to.

What I'd love to do is just write product reviews and be ranked based on the quality of those reviews.

I didn't say I expected it to happen, just that I'd love for it to happen.

There are plenty of other ways to judge popularity these days including monitoring mentions on social media

I don't think they'd just hit the "on" switch for google caffeine. Too many marketers would have a cow. I think progressively more and more servers will start adding features although I haven't seen any rank change as of yet.

I have a simple 5 page Adsense site that last fall went from Google position #4 to no where to be found, but still indexed.

Then three weeks ago, it went back to #5 for day, made some money, then gone again.

Last week, back to #5 for 3 days, then gone again.

I was guessing it was Caffeine coming and going, but not sure if I'm #5 with Caffeine or without.

No recent backlinking. I stopped backlinking it in October, it went away in November.

I have it on good authority (at least to me anyways) that there is to be a major update next month where the algorithm is to change to favor dynamic websites that update frequently. Backlinking will still be important.
This is a large company that is an affiliate site that had a meeting with their SEO department to discuss this.
I came to find out because I just hired this affiliate company for ppc affiliate traffic buying. The VP of Sales just told me himself.
Could he be lying? No way as there was 0 reason for it at all. He told me because he is redoing one of their main sites in anticipation of this update and switching to a more dynamic php coded site.
Could it be a rumor that caused a meeting and be totally untrue? Absolutely, as I have no idea how they heard about it, though I would hesitate to believe it as this is not some basement nerd doing SEO it is a large national affiliate site that does business with large public companies.

Some of my sites climbed up the ways and some went down the ways. I guess there's probably enough data there for me to investigate and come out with a conclusion. MY mini conlusion without investigation is that the sites I wasn't backlinking rose and the one's I was dropped. But in sying this, we're not gonna hear much from the over anlaytical a while yet.
