Hey, I am a bit of a newbie and I am on page 1 of google in the number #2 position for a keyword phrase with the ("") but when i search without the quotes I am not even on the first 4 pages og google for that phrase! If that is the case why do we do keyword research with the quotes on if it does not show up without the quotes? Thanks Can someone explain?

The keyword search in "" is only usefull to see the direct competition.

When you use "" you will only get results that has that exact sentence/keyword with the words in that order.

When you search without "" like most do, you also has to compete with the other sites that mentions the keyword and writes the word in another order.

Still, the "" gives a good indication of how hard it will be to rank. But you also have to look at the results without "" to see how the first results on that search are doing.

It is easy to rank for your keyword in quotes, but no one searches that way, you have to do a bit more to rank on the general first page of serps

in other words... don't do your keyword research with quotes. It's kinda pointless.

I always check out the direct quotes because it does tell you how much direct competition you are dealing with. If you optimize your site well and backlink then usually its a bit easier to rank highly with anything under 50k direct competing. Just based on my experience.

It's also important though to check out the broad match and see the top ten. The top 3 should be your main targets to analyze.
