Several sites or one site?

There's a niche I'm working on where I've identified around 6 keywords that all get decent traffic where .com or .net domains are available for the exact keyword phrase.

What I would normally do is set up a site for each of the keywords, but what I'm thinking is to consolidate my efforts on one site, with each of the page titles matching each one of the keywords.

What are people's thoughts on what would be easier to rank? Several sites with the exact keyword domain, or one site targetting all the keywords?

I have had similar success in the past with a bigger site or individual micro sites for longtails. However, I have noticed that for less competitive niches, micro sites with the exact keyword phrase tend to rank faster on the 1st page of google than a larger site targeting several keywords even when marketed exactly the same. So from a speed standpoint I would say that micro sites would be better as long as the competition is not too stiff.

On the other hand, if the phrases are related then a bigger site may prove better in the long run because you could end up getting cross traffic and more conversions.

    Good Luck!

Thanks both. I think I'll go for the several sites option then. They're promoting a Clickbank product, and I need them to be as targetted as possible, so it makes sense. Pleny of content creation to keep me busy!

I would agree that in this case having multiple websites is the way to go, 1 for each keyword, if the .com is available.

In fact, I have a bunch of sites like this where I own the .com of the actual keyword and can be #1 on Google within 2 weeks. I pick keywords that have less then 100k competition and analyze the top guys before jumping in - but this method works.

You can do one site and what you'll want to do is link your pages together. Internal linking will help all of them rank a little higher.

If you want to rank faster then definitely use the EMD. I found you'll rank much faster, but it'll cost you an extra $50 for the other 5 domains you'll want.

    • I know the gurus will tell you to have several mini sites but I totally disagree. Sure it may work but I don't think it's necessary. Why go through all the effort of maintaining multiple sites?

If these are easy keywords to rank for, you can rank for them just as easily from one site vs. having multiple mini sites. Plus, you can concentrate your efforts on one site and grow it into an authority site in the niche.

My vote is to concentrate on one site. While these micro sites might be good now to make a quick buck I don't like the odds of them enjoying a long lifespan. Google's algorithm is consistently improving and a lot of these "thin content" sites are going to get weeded out in the months and years ahead. Build something with some meat that Google sees as an authority and you'll be making money for years to come, with little chance of getting de-indexed. Just my .02
