I'm new to internet marketing and have noticed a few people talk about pinging their new article/site and was just wondering what that means and what benefits you receive from doing so. Also, where can i go to do it and is it free? thanks to anyone who helps!

pingler.com (the best free service yet)

It builds something similar to backlinks, the benefit is that search engines can find your website faster. I dunno if it gives any boost to your rank, some says they do, some say they don't.

It is more used for blog posts but can be used for any webpages essentially - it is a way of telling live update type services that you have a new page on your site - it won't make a massive difference but can help you to get indexed etc.
Pingomatic is the go to free service as far as I know, don't think I'm allowed to post links but just do a search for it - very simple to use. Oh, and there are also wordpress aps to help you automatically ping your new posts too

Pinging a site basically lets the search engines know that the site exists so that it can be indexed quicker

It alerts the search engines and other services to changes you've made on your site.

It sends them a message to come check out your new content. This (potentially) speeds up indexing and gaining rankings in the search engines.

You can enter your URL at Ping-o-Matic! for example.

Can you ping an article on EZA or should this only be used on your own sites and blogs?

Actually, as most people phrase it (pinging my site) is somewhat misleading... because in reality your site is pinging other sites

Your site sends a "ping" notifying other servers, services, aggregators etc. about being updated.

Everyone has a different view point about pinging but the truth is, it simply notifies google about a new post or your blog to get it noticed

Pinging is good, but you need to be careful not to get it hyped else it could form a disaster for you as a spam to search engines

Pinging does work generally to get a money website indexed as long as the content is unique. I recommend pingfarm.

Wow. Lets get pinging some more action. lol.
There are so many different views on pinging. If its wordpress then go to settings writing and look at the bottom that url is where it is set up at.
Add to it with other urls.
Pinging to a 1000 or 10,000 sites I do not think really matters. I have a list of 1600 urls i always ping too.
I ping anything, even a noteworthy thread. Does it help, probably not but been pinging since pinging was around so I doubt I will stop.

I believe pinging one site is just as good as pinging 1600 but with google sitemap I don't even think you need pinging as long as you update it when you put new content on.

Pinging is done to index your site or any link in the Search Engines which will easily catch the url and fast index it if it is not indexing frequently.

Pinging helps sometimes but not always. You need a link indexer service if you want guaranteed results.

It is an automatic notification to a search enginesthat a page has been updated and it should be recrawled. Specifically, this is relevant for social properties like blogs, forums and other web 2.0 sites that are indexed by several search engines that keep a record of the page and the date.

Always go for manual pinging, or you site will be termed as spammer from pinging servers. Because in auto mode, any update to your post or page will be auto pinged and put strain on your servers. Remember, pinging is resource intensive task.

For manual pinging or indexing use these sites Indexkings, bulkping, pingomatic etc

Pinging didn't do jack in 2013. Maybe it worked to an extend in 2010, but I can't remember any more.

However, it's ludicrous that you post to this old thread let alone talk about this crap like it matters.
