What SEO and indexing steps should I be taking?

Hi,
I am completely new at this, I only have 1 other post here, and it was an adsense application question. I got that issue cleared up and now have an active adsense account. I have a website in the works, it is not completely finished yet, but almost. Here are my questions: (please forgive me if I sound amateur, I am!)

1) What are the meta tags I need to focus on?
2) After my site is complete, should I submit it to any certain directories? (dmoz, google, social bookmarking sites, etc)
3) What are these 'nofollow/dofollow' terms I keep seeing, and do I need to include these?
4) Am I missing anything else?
5) What is 'pinging' and do I need to do this?

I know the best kind of traffic to get is organic search engine traffic, and I have heard about article marketing for backlinks....

Sorry this is such a loaded question, I hope it is in the right forum!

This is the right forum and I'd be happy to share my thoughts on your questions.

    1) The two most important tags are title tag and description tag. I'm pretty sure the keyword tag carries no weight, but if you want throw in a few keywords anyways.

    2) Yes, you should do your keyword research and build links accordingly. You mentioned some of the methods, but there are many more.

    3) A no-follow tag can be added to a link which means the link doesn't carry pagerank juice. This has been over-hyped and there are a lot of myths about it. Don't worry about no-follow to much, you'll have both types of links.

    4) Yes, I believe you need an introduction course to SEO. You've asked some great questions but you need some direction and an overview. Keep reading through the forums and check out SEO Fast Start (free book) by Dan Thies to get a free introduction to SEO.

    5) Pinging sends a notice to the search engines to come and check out the page. It helps the page get indexed quickly and you should use it to your advantage.

I hope my answers helped you out a bit, but I still highly recommend getting an introduction to SEO so you have some direction. Good luck!
