Does domain age matter THAT much?

My site is about 10 months old & is a real authority site (pr3). I have also done extensive backlinking to it.

I currently rank #3 for my most important keyword.

I was analyzing the #2 site which is a thin affiliate site (pr2). And the backlinking it extremely weak compared to mine.

Is this because the domain is much older than mine (4+ years)? Or is something else going on?

    Hi
there are many factors to consider and yes site age is one of them along with aged backlinks.

I built a website for someone in a non competitive niche and its on the first page of google ranking very high in the SERPS - the competitor sites have been around much longer but still this website outranks theres.

This maybe the case for this website in its current niche but its clear that this is not the case for other niches.

the best advise that I can give is to analyse the sites that rank higher then yours. If you are in a non competitive niche then maybe the website that is ranking #4 under your site might be the next authoritative website so thats the reason why they are 4th. have a look at the sites under the 4th ranking website and analyse them also.

A few areas to check would be the

    titles
    meta description
the usage of keywords around the pages
    internal linking
    site age
    backlinks
    outbound links

Site age is important but so are other factors.

    Hi

Domain age is a factor, but I would think it probably isnt that on its own keeping hte sites above you, although it probably is because they have had their domains for longer and been promoting them for a lot longer lol which is kinda an age factor in itself!

Its always difficult when you can see sites above you and you havent a clue why, as abs has posted above, you could look into those factors, to be honest though ive looked at sites for hours wondering how they got above some of mine and never quite worked it out.

I wouldnt over analyse it you might waste time you could be spending to promote your site on things you cant change anyway, you have come this far in 10 months just keep doing what your doing and you will pass them eventually, keep learning from the people on this forum, once you get to know more and more tips on promoting ur site.

You could post the search if you wanted people to have a nosey for you ?

I believe that domian age does matter but not to the point where you could not out rank them.

Something that you might be missing is that fact that no search engine is going to show you ALL the other sites backlinks when you research so they might have a higher PR link to their site that isn't revealed in the research.

My best advice would be to try to obtain some high PR backlinks to your site to out rank them. Also it could come down to the last time that Google spidered your site, indexed your backlinks, and moved you up in the SERPS.

Domain age does matter for PR but not really for SERP.

I believe it is a factor but not sure to what degree it matters. I am convinced that it matters, I am just not sure how much. There are too many variables to properly know exactly how much domain age matters. All things being equal, which usually never is the case, an older site would beat a younger site.
