SEO and Top Level Domain choices

Howdy all,

I'm wondering if search engine selections are impacted by the TLD chosen for a website, like .com, .net, org, etc?
I understand the impact of competing with other sites for traffic that have the same domain name but a different TLD. I'm also aware that not all Registrar companies support every TLD.
But from the standpoint of search engine traffic alone, does it matter whether the site is .com or any other? It shouldn't affect page rank either, right? Is there different optimization needed?

Thanks for your reply!

For SEO purpose, no, it doesn't matter. Here's an article I wrote about it just recently that goes into a lot of detail: Earn Online Cash with .Info Domains

Very good article, I will agree with it totally.
Our main website is also .info extension and I must say it is performing better than any of our .com ever did. Of course we have done quite a bit of SEO on it, with the proper SEO you can work wonders, does not matter what extension the domain is. I have no problem buying and developing info domains as they have become very popular lately and I have noticed that most of the good info domains are already taken but there is still some good ones left but not for long. We did pay $ 15 for our .info,
could have got 3 .com's for that

  • Supposedly not. However if you want to capture customer mind share your best bet is with a dot com.

You won't need different optimization, or anything. It actually doesn't matter that much. To me, it's a preference. Even a Blogspot blog does well - a guy named Griz has proven that. He's been on the first page of "make money online" on Google for like 3 years, and he has a Blogspot blog.

I'd say go with .com anyways, they're usually the safest choice.
