Yes, but they next to useless for passing 'link juice'.

What do you need - backlinks or traffic?
Nowadays backlinks are not so effective! Don`t think only about quantity, think about quality of backlinks!

Not judging or saying that I disagree, I'm generally curious why it would be better to have them from multiple sites?

it depends if the link is
    1.) nofollow or dofollow
    2.) same domain or not
    3.) same IP or not,

if it is in the same IP, then Google counts it as 1 link and not 1000 hopes that help

      You would get 1,000 backlinks.

The question is, would google recognize them?

      Maybe.

Since nobody here works for google, we probably cannot say.

      Forum backlinks are gold.

Don't listen to dofollow nonsense. Google does not "dofollow."
They only count backlinks they consider counting. Period.
You cannot force google to count a link.

If you put 1,000 links on a forum that was indexed by google
AND crawled a lot, they would all count. Maybe. But that "maybe"
is only something google knows for sure.

If I was Google, I would not recognize 1000 links from one site, would you?

If you post few posts and get a signature and after that you stop posting would lead to dismiss of your account from the forum. It would be a better option to post in a natural way. As and how you increase you grade in the forums you signature weightage would also increase.
So it's better to keep posting on a regular basis. If you post 30-40 in 2 - 3 day also might not work out.

the perfect forum for you to chase for backlinks must meet these requirements: PR 4 or above, dofollow backlinks, anchor text of your own choice, IP diversity, and you don't need to login to see the backlinks...

these kinds of backlinks will surely add some juice to your site...

    Remember simple rule:
    1 link on website = 1 backlink
100 links on same website = 100 backlinks = Counts as 1 backlink

I use forums for conversations and traffic because it doesn't give me much link juice like others does.

Google will most likely devalue "too many" links on any one site. So spread your links around on as many different IP's as possible.
