I noticed something weird about the keyword "cheap" yesterday.

I have a site called "Cheap French Fries" (not really ), and I've been having a heck of a time getting it to rank.

What I noticed is that, on google webmaster tools, the keyword "cheap" doesn't show up on my keyword list.

Further, I looked over page 1 for a search of cheap french fries, and the first result doesn't even have the word "cheap" on it.

Does this imply that somehow google is ignoring the word "cheap" in searches? Or at least treating it differently than other keywords?

It looks like I may have put myself in the situation where I'm competing against all the french fries sites.

No...Google is not ignoring the keyword.

If you type in "cheap flights" or anything related, you'll find normal results.

Are people searching for "cheap french fries" (or whatever your keyword is)? I checked "cheap" plus my keywords and there are no searches for it. So maybe that is what you are facing here?

  • Google is going to return results based on the most RELEVANT words in the keyword search phrase. The additional words are getting the "weight".

Yeah with the term french fries, being so generic you're gonna have a bit of battle getting a good page rank..and the word cheap doesn't really help the situation for the same reason that it isn't a focused KW

That's interesting. It sounds like google "weighs" keywords in some way. I haven't found any other keywords (except words like "the", "is", etc.) that don't show up on webmaster tools. Perhaps "cheap" is some sort of exception.

It definitely weighs it at least somewhat, but it's almost like "cheap" is serving as a limiting factor: it's weighed for "french fries", and then all the "french fries" pages without "cheap" aren't shown.

It's just about relevancy and search demand. There isn't much relevant information or significant number of searches for "cheap french fries" so the most relevant topic for that search phrase is just "french fries"

EXAMPLE: The site in my sig shows up as #2 for "Oompa Loompa swing trading course". Nobody is looking for "Oompa Loompa swing trading courses" and there aren't any relevant pages so Google divides it and thinks that you are eigher looking for some subset of the phrase like "Oompa Loompas" or "Swing trading courses" but not both.
