So... where's my traffic???

A little over a week ago I finally reached page 1 for the keyword I'm targeting (first link in my sig) and rising. I believe I'm currently in position #7-5. According to GKT, my keyword got 135K exact searches in Dec and Jan.

According to Google Analytics, I'm getting 3-6 visitors a day from Google.

Can anyone tell me if this sounds correct for the position I'm currently in and the not-lazer-targeted keyword, or if they see anything I'm doing blatantly wrong?

My Google listing is as follows:

Starting a Small Business as an Independent Computer Consultant!

If you're a Computer Consultant, you can have greater job security, massive income potential and unlimited growth opportunities by starting a small business ...

Thanks,
-Robert

135,000 Global searches per month, which means the whole 137 geographical sites that google own , like google.co.uk, google.com etc etc etc

I see you are in the top 10 for Google.com and .co.uk but what about the others ? The other could hold a large percentage of that 135,000 searches.

In the UK for example it only has 6600 local searches per month , which is pretty small , i would imagine that the US is alot more than that ?.

but as an example 6600 searches in the UK would work out at around 220 per day , which would then be spread between the top 10 , dramatically declining in percentage of hits below 4th place ( depending on how relevant the top 3 are )

These are also estimates so they may not even be 100% correct.

well, using another tool, according to seo books keyword tool, that keyword gets around 60 searches a day... which is more in line with the amount of traffic you are receiving.

I think it might have to do with the title of your site... people searching for 'computer consultant' are probably looking for a computer consultant and not Starting a Small Business as an Independent Computer Consultant! so your keywords are barking up the wrong tree and people are skipping your site because it's not what they are looking for.

    I'm all about that bass.

I'm using Google Adwords External Keyword Tool: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Those numbers are what it's reporting and has been reporting similarly for many months.

How is it possible that GKT and SEO Books can be so far off from each other? Who's right? How the f*** are you supposed to do keyword research if the data we're given is completely meaningless?! A large portion of warriors specializing in SEO recommend using GKT. Could the data really be that wrong/exagerated/misleading?

I certainly considered that my keyword would be hitting untargeted traffic, but with 135K monthly searches, I felt (and still believe) a decent percentage will be actual computer consultants (either looking for companies to work for, or for ideas for their own businesses, or looking at their competition, or looking for info on becoming one). If only 10% of the total are my potential customers, it's still a decent keyword.

But if my keyword is getting 1800 searches a month instead of 135,000, I've wasted a tremendous amount of time, effort and money trying to get ranked.

I just checked spyfu as per another warrior's recommendation, which shows about 2500 searches daily. Not quite what GKT reports, but still a respectable amount.

          Hi perryny,

I see a couple of issues with your keyword.

First, if you look at the GKT data you will see a spike in searches last month that is way above the average month. That means something unusual happened in January that is skewing the data. You should look at the traffic for each month to get a more realistic idea of what to expect.

The second issue is the keyword itself has a lot ambiguity. With these types of keywords you will have a much lower CTR because most searches are abandoned or refined with more specific terms. You need to focus on the large number of long tail keywords that use "computer consultant" as a root term. The more specific the keyword the better the CTR will be.

            Thanks Don.

When I started researching this keyword in Nov, it had about 70K in searches in Oct. The number has been rising each month since. I'm not sure why it's almost doubled recently, but the searches overall are consistently high enough for me to justify trying for it.

I understand the ambiguity of the keyword, but l there's only so many reasons for entering this term. Either you are a computer consultant, or you're looking for one. If even a very small percentage of 135K is the former, I'd still expect a lot more visitors than I've been getting.

GKT in my opinion has HIGHLY unreliable data. One of my site's main keyword was reported to have 300,000 searches/month, and with it being in the 4th position of that keyword I should have been getting rougly 5-10% of traffic (15000-30000/mth) just from that keyword, yet I was getting a small fraction of that.

You can try doing a small test buy changing your title to "computer consultant" and change the description to be more attractive to someone looking for a computer consultant. After you get crawled, do that for a week and see if you get more traffic.

Out of curiousity, can you share what seo methods you used and how long it took to get to the first page for your keyword? Always interested in seeing what worked well for others.
