Keyword Research - Pyramid Technique

OK, I was speaking the other week with a well regarded SEO consultant in my country. I gave him some of the ideas of KWs I was going to target in my onsite/offsite SEO for my site and he said I was being far too ambitious.

We didn't speak for long, but he said I should build my site on a pyramid basis, with longtail KWs on the base of the pyramid and then working up from there. With each more broader KW being based on the more targeted longtail KW below.

So, to use the widget example:

blue mechanical widget reviews / green mechanical widget reviews / red mechanical widget reviews

next level >>
blue widget reviews / green widget reviews / red widget reviews

next level >>
widget reviews

next level >>
widgets

I've read articles advising on a KW architecture with a similar basis, but hadn't come across this pyramid concept before.

I guess offline the benefit may be that by tareting in your anchor text for links the longtail KW ''blue mechanical widget reviews'', you're also getting the broader KW ''widget reviews''

Thoughts appreciated

Thanks ..

It's very sound advice. Similar to advice Matt Cutts gives using the example of the Katamari game...you start small and as your experience grows, you're able to take out larger and larger targets (ok, so that's a bad job of paraphrasing...buy you know what I mean )

  • Write for people around keyword themes.

Here is an example of a site I have that is focused on a a very tight niche. I have essentially 6 Keyword Themes... meaning keywords related to a specific part of the site.

Let me give you an example: Lets say my site is about NCAA Sports

    One theme is basketball
    One is baseball
    One is Tennis

    etc.

    Now the stats:

Search sent 5,637 total visits via 3,123 keywords

Those are all long tail keyword phrases... variations on the theme.

When you try and target each specific phrase your writing is un natural. As you write naturally the keyword phrases fall into place.

So pick your keyword theme... pick a few phrases.. then just write what comes natural and work on linking.

Pyramid technique described here makes a complete sense. I have an offline consulting biz and I always pick 5 to 7 long tailed kwds apart from prime kwd phrases that I ultimately want to conquer for my clients (in about 3 to 5 months). In most of cases, more than 70% of the increased traffic to my client's websites are coming from those long tailed kwds plus other obscure long tailed keywords that Google naturally ranked our clients sites for. In the meantime, those sites start to get authority so usually by 4th to 5th month, I rank their sites for the prime keyword phrases (usually two to three word keyword phrases with higher search volume) then the traffic volume reach the next level.

Yes, Pyramid method works well. We have to do that as lot of top level keyword is very difficult to be ranked well.
